Ask JH Nordic: Is XC Skiing Still Possible This Weekend?

Hi,
I am traveling to Jackson and I am trying to workout if it is still possible to go XC skiing during this weekend or next week? The grooming schedule on https://jhnordic.com/grooming/ makes it seem like most of the trails are no longer available, is that correct? If some of the trails are available could you point me to them and possibly where I could find rentals?
All the best,
Mikkel

Hello Mikkel,

While grooming has ended on the Jackson Hole side of the Tetons, Trail Creek Nordic was groomed on Wednesday March 30 so it will still have good skiing this weekend. Donate the trail pass fee in the Ski Club Cabin box.

Several excellent trails are still being groomed in Teton Valley, ID, approx. 50 minutes from Jackson:

  • Grand Targhee -at 8100 ft, still has good snow and grooming. Rolling hills, beautiful views and trails.
  • Teton Canyon -groomed 4 times/week -flat, nice views of the west side of the Grand Teton.
  • Alta track – near Teton Canyon -gently rolling terrain ..

Check out the recent Nordic Trail Reports -for the latest conditions:  jhnordic.com/trail-reports/

On March 29th, we highlighted several spring season places to ski: https://jhnordic.com/29-march-22-daily-trail-report/. Also included in the March 29th post are all the secrets to crust cruising and skiing groomed trails in the spring; see: Planning Your Next Spring Ski Adventure.

For rentals this weekend, try calling Skinny Skis and JD High Country Outfitters in Jackson.  Grand Targhee may still be open for rentals or try Yostmark or Peaked Sports in Driggs. See JHNordic.com/resources/ for contact info.  There are some excellent locate places to eat, have coffee or a local beer in both Driggs and Victor, so it’s a fun day out.

All the Best,

JHNordic

Grooming Update

West Yellowstone Rendezvous trails are still grooming, if you are headed up in that direction. Trails were groomed Tuesday (3/29) evening with Ginzu.  Skate lane only.  In/Out, Rendezvous, Deja View, Purple Haze.  No new snow, 26F at 11:30pm.  Expect Spring conditions.

West Yellowstone will continue to groom as long as conditions allow. Our season generally ends at the end of March, but if the snow continues to hold up we will groom more. It becomes a day to day decision. Thank you!

Crust cruising is still on in selected areas based on snow, temps, elevation and weather.
