Trip Report: Island Hopping From Colter Bay

Trip Report: Island Hopping Jackson Lake, from Colter Bay. The sculpted shapes of the Tetons and its glacial canyons brought such beauty to this B.C. cross country outing. Snow had drifted in parts and was surprisingly deep. Be alert for occasional small pools of open water. Submitted by Nancy L.

Red in the Morning!

The old adage that goes “Red in the morning sailors take warning” has been around for a very long time with references going clear back to the Bible; even Shakespeare wrote in his play, Venus and Adonis, “Like a red morn that ever yet betokened, wreck to the seaman, tempest to the field, sorrow to the shepherds, woe unto the birds, gusts and foul flaws to herdsmen and to herds.”

While we definitely don’t want sorrow to shepherds or any of the other dire predictions from our beautiful red morning start today, a little snow storm would be much appreciated by most in our beautiful valley.  The forecast is not overly optimistic; however it does look like we’ll be getting a few inches of that amazing white stuff over the next couple of days which will do a fantastic job of freshening our Nordic trails.

Those Nordic trails are ready and waiting for you to take a ski at Trail Creek today.  Today’s grooming actually began last night with almost every trail in the woods receiving a pass of the Husky.  The majority of the evening operations included fresh sharp classic tracks.  The Husky returned to duty early this morning, making double classic track and skate passes throughout the fields.  Skiing is nice now and should continue to be nice throughout the day as hopefully some snow begins to fall.

Groomer’s choice for today is to enjoy a ski through the woods in the falling snow.

Our trails continue to be in great shape despite the warm weather we’ve recently had. Our snowpack is holding steady right now and we are hoping the snow arrives late this weekend for a nice refresh. Skate skiing is off the charts and classic is good, but it will be better once we get this new snow! The classic track conditions are perfect for your skin skis but we are really hoping to get back to some Blue Extra conditions next week!

We groom 13km+ daily for both skate and classic with our new snowcat.

Our trails and shop are fully open to the public 9am-4pm daily. Day passes, 10 punch cards, and season passes are available at the shop.

Please call us in advance to book lessons at: (307) 733-1733. You do not need a reservation for skiing and we do not take reservations for rentals. Please contact us in advance to check availability for off-site rentals.

We still have a limited selection of skate skis, a few classic track and BC skis, boots, poles, jackets, pants, gloves, and hats. We also have a good selection of used skate gear available. Call or come by to see if we have your sizes! We have a full tuning shop so drop off your skis for a wax done by our great wax techs! Expect blustery conditions this President’s Day weekend as a series of new weather systems are forecasted to push through. Windy weather will exist Friday-Sunday, followed by snow beginning Sunday afternoon and lasting through Monday. Possible Drifting and inconsistent snow profiles may exist as the wind will promote soft and icy sections. Overall, skiing should be enjoyable, but be aware that conditions may change very quickly depending on how this system develops. Next update will be by Monday (2/21).

  • Morel Mushroom Foraging in the Tetons
Let’s make lemonade out of lemons.. the lemonade being morel mushrooms and the lemons being the lingering cold temperatures (snow, sleet, and hail). What comes with so much needed precipitation are morels! Morel mushrooms are fungi that grow in the filtered light of forests. These oddly shaped mushrooms graze the valley floor and make for a fun activity for the whole family. Walking through the woods or floating the Snake River with a keen eye… Read More
