NEW ON THE BLOG: Profiles in Nordic – Sean O’Malley

In this newest edition of Profiles in Nordic: In Their Own Words, JH Nordic interviewed Sean O’Malley, the original Jackson Hole Nordic News Editor, a Nordic master racer, JH Ski Club Nordic coach and all around inspiration to the community. Spoiler alert, there are some really fun retro pics in this article, including when Sean was a Nordic ski model. We can’t say enough good things about him, he’s one of the JH Nordic Alliance founders and a local Nordic hero.

BaCryoloops, The Extension, Erick’s Extension, Willy’s Wander, Dark Hallow, Chill Hallow, Devo’s Delight, Lolli’s Lost Land, & Twilight for Teewinots!!

These are just a few of the names being floated around the Nordic division of JHSC for the name of the new extension at the bottom of Faceplant.  Themes of dark and chilly have been popular as the cold air does tend to pool and the far end is full of thick trees.  All the names have a certain appeal; time is on our side, we can let these percolate and hopefully the best will rise to the top.

Speaking of rising to the top, if all has gone according to plan, our JHSC nationally qualifying racers are in the Midwest today, preparing for a great week of racing at the national junior Nordic championships.  The event officially kicks off tomorrow with racing beginning on Monday.  The Loppet Foundation Junior National Championships website indicates that not only results, but live streaming will be available on Monday.  Check it out and go JHSC skiers!

Today at Trail Creek about a half inch has fallen in the past 24 with dark skies, calm winds, temps right around freezing, and a few snowflakes falling.  The Husky was hard at it today, covering nearly every trail.  Most woods trails received a single skate/classic pass with Animal Farm and the field trails receiving multiple passes with fresh classic tracks.  If you are lucky enough to make it out for a ski today, expect nice spring conditions.

Groomer’s choice for today is Cryoloops, The Extension, Erick’s Extension, Willy’s Wander, Dark Hallow, Chill Hallow, Devo’s Delight, Lolli’s Lost Land, & Twilight for Teewinots or whatever you want to call it.

The levee and stilson were groomed and still in decent shape. The school fields were not groomed Saturday because there is not enough snow.

Cache Creek Fat Bike Trails

Last Update: 2/22

I groomed the trails in Cache last night and will take another lap this afternoon to firm things up and will snowshoe the smaller trails on Wednesday. That way everything should be in good shape for Winter Trails Day this Saturday!

Teton Pines Nordic

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 3/3

Our trails are still in pretty good shape despite the last 3 super warm days and nights. We are currently grooming with our ginzu groomer to preserve our track until fresh snow arrives this weekend. The best time for skiing over the next couple of days is from 9:45am-11:30am. The classic track is more negatively affected by our current weather situation, so skate skiing is recommended! If the weather forecast holds up for next week, our ski conditions should be back to normal late this weekend. Stay tuned.

New Salomon skis in stock now!!  We received a surprise shipment of classic skis in a couple of lengths. If you are between 110-195lbs we have skis for you. We have boots and poles to go with them too! These skis were supposed to arrive last September but have been stuck in the Covid shipping delay situation. We are happy they finally made it to the shop!

Our trails and shop are fully open to the public 9am-4pm daily. Please call us in advance to book lessons at: (307) 733-1733. You do not need a reservation for skiing and we do not take reservations for rentals. Please contact us in advance to check availability for off-site rentals.

In our retail shop we still have a small size selection of skate skis and BC skis, but have lots of boots, poles, jackets, pants, gloves, and hats. We also have a good selection of used skate gear available. Call or come by to see if we have your sizes! We have a full tuning shop so drop off your skis for a wax done by our great wax techs! Shooting Star

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 3/4

It continues to be a winter full of extremes! Record warmth this past week has rapidly diminished our profile and thin to bare spots are very close to forming throughout the trail system. Springtime conditions will yet again exist through Saturday with the trails skiing icier/fast in the morning and slushy/soft in the afternoons. Good news is that more snow and colder temperatures are forecasted to begin this Sunday lasting for most of next week… which should assist us in keeping the trails open for at least a few more weeks. Due to the current drastic swings in the weather (record highs & upcoming new snowfall) , we are still evaluating as to when we’ll begin applying black sand on the greens. As of today, I am still monitoring this coming Monday or Tuesday, but it depends on what kind of snowfall we receive, and I will update everyone once we commit to a game plan. Overall, the spring skiing has been great! Reminder that conditions will be fast and icy in the morning! Enjoy! Next update will be Sunday (3/6).

Turpin Meadow Ranch

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 3/5

The pisten bully will be out early on Sunday morning. Turpin has been in the path of the snow, receiving about 4 inches early Saturday morning and more continuing to fall throughout the day. The snow is heavy, wet and stubborn so the bully is only laying corduroy. Despite there being no classic track set the classic skiing has been very enjoyable.

Trail Etiquette: Please keep your dogs leashed in the parking lot and be sure to clean up after them!

Southern Valley Nordic

Skate: Set | Classic: Not Set

Tried to get some grooming done last night but warm temps weren’t cooperative. The grooming was turning out worse than the existing trail conditions so I stopped grooming. With a little snow and some colder temps we’ll get the trails back in shape.

No dogs December 1 – April 15.

Teton Reserve Nordic

Grooming Schedule: Monday, Thursday & Saturday

Skate: Not Set | Classic: Not Set

Friday evening I went out for a scout to groom the reserve. The snowpack has gone isothermal and is either a sloppy mess or frozen block of ice in the early morning. We’re going to need to hold off on grooming until we receive some new snow and let these temperatures drop. We’ll give it another go in day or two. Standby.

No dogs allowed.

  • Get Outside: Early Season Skiing and More in Jackson Hole
While many of us dream of clipping into our skis for early-season skiing in Jackson Hole, this November, you can still see the roots and rocks beneath your feet. A forecast predicts another 3 inches of snow this weekend in Jackson, with a few more inches expected into Thanksgiving week, and we’re all ready for it. Until then, we patiently wait for the snow to fall, fill in nicely, and for temperatures to drop, creating… Read More
