Crust Cruising, Get it While You Can!

Crust Cruising in Jackson Hole, Grand Teton National Park (photo courtesy: Sean O’Malley)

After a winter of heavy snowfall in the Tetons – it might be hard to conceptualize that spring is just around the corner. But alas, our clocks have already sprung forward and spring is officially coming. And with spring comes the fleeting window of crust-cruising classic and skate skiing: skiing on top of the firm snow crust at the perfect moment between too firm/icy and slush over endless open meadows. Read the article for tips on how to get the most enjoyment out of this fickle and fun season.

Profiles in Nordic: Stacey Barker of Barking Goat Studios

For the 2023 ski season, we were fortunate to collaborate with Stacey Barker of Barking Goat Studios on a custom JH Nordic NoSo Patch and sticker. The design, pictured left, depicts a few of the different ways recreators can use winter trails with animals doing human things, a familiar subject for Stacey’s illustrations. “A lot of my stuff is animal based. I like doing this thing where I draw an animal doing a human activity,” explains Barker.

Check out the article to learn more about the artist and to find out how you can win a JH Nordic NoSo patch for yourself!

Sublime Sunday
It’s hard to believe that we could have perfect midwinter conditions less than a week from the end of the season, but it’s the truth! Light snowfall and a little drifting, plus perfect grooming temperatures, has resulted in some truly beautiful grooming today, barring a few moose tracks here and there, with a confirmation that there are now 7 moose sharing our trails.

Today’s grooming was a single best-line pass of most trails, with double passes on Animal Farm, Déjà vu, and the East Fields. Superplant(the special hill just to the left of Faceplant) was touched up as well, and should be an exciting slide down for the more adventurous crowd.

Groomer’s choice is the East Fields.

Unfortunately there was no grooming Saturday at Emily’s Pond Levee, High School Fields, Stilson Loop, Wilson Centennial Trail because the groomer was sick and the backup operator was not available either. Grooming will resume on Tuesday.

Shooting Star

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 3/20
The track groomed out very nice yesterday evening as warmer afternoon temperatures allowed our equipment to cut through the stubborn ice layer that formed from last week’s rain and subzero temperatures. For the remainder of the season, grooming will occur in either evenings or mornings depending on temperatures and storms. Anticipate grooming to occur in the morning time for most of this week, as the forecast is calling for daily snow and rain showers. Please note, in certain situations, such as a very wet rain/snow event, we may decide not to groom to preserve the integrity of trails as the snow base can become unstable causing severe ruts. Springtime brings constant evolving conditions throughout the whole day as massive temperatures swings promotes intense freeze/thaw cycles, creating icier morning skiing and softer, even slushy snow in the afternoon. The track this time of year can also settle out inconsistently while the snow melts during the day creating sunken spots, especially around catch/drainage basins. Skiers may also encounter icy and crumbly snow sections as the track is not as pliable once it makes the spring profile shift. We will continue to do our best working with the everchanging, sometimes extremely challenging spring conditions and update everyone over any noteworthy details as they arise. Enjoy the springtime skiing and soak up those sunny days whenever they pop up!

Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged. All you need to do is visit: GTNPF.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Nordic” in the designation section. There is the opportunity to leave a one time gift or reoccurring monthly donations in any amount.

Skate: Not Set | Classic: Not Set
Went to the track this afternoon with the intention of running the sled around to pack out the snow. However, there is a thing called too much snow and that is where the Alta track is currently. Many of the guiding stakes have disappeared making it difficult to impossible keep the equipment on the track. We’re in a holding pattern until the snow settles and the stakes reappear.
