Teton Park Road Opens to Non-Motorized Recreation

Media Release from Grand-Teton National Park: The Teton Park Road between the Taggart Lake Trailhead and Signal Mountain Lodge is open to non-motorized recreational uses such as walking, bicycling, and rollerblading beginning Friday, March 25.

Please use caution, as snow and ice may persist on some sections of the roadway creating slick conditions. Recreationists should also be alert for park vehicles that periodically travel this roadway for administrative purposes as spring opening operations continue. Road crews may be clearing auxiliary roads and wayside areas, and visitors are cautioned to keep a safe distance from rotary plows and other heavy equipment.

Visitors enjoying the Teton Park Road are encouraged to be good stewards of the park and reminded:

  • Vehicles should slow down and use caution in the area.
  • Be respectful of other visitors enjoying the area and be thoughtful of how music may affect others. Operating an audio device, such as a stereo, Bluetooth speakers, radio, or musical instrument in a manner which is unreasonable and impacts park users is prohibited by law.
  • Water is not available at the trailhead or along the road. Be self-sufficient with water, snacks, and bicycle/skate repairs.
  • Vault toilets are available at Taggart Lake Trailhead and Cottonwood Picnic Area, with portable toilets located along the road between Cottonwood and North Jenny Lake Junction, and restroom facilities at Signal Mountain Lodge.
  • Pack it in, pack it out. There are limited trash receptacles at both ends of the road. Do not put trash in the portable toilets.
  • Dogs are permitted on the Teton Park Road. Dog owners are required to use a leash no longer than six feet in length and are required to clean up after their dogs. Waste disposal bag stations are located at each end of the road. Bags should be deposited into appropriate trash receptacles and not left along the road.
  • Consider beginning at the Signal Mountain end of the road as it is less busy and offers ample parking, restroom facilities, water filling station, and self-pay fuel pumps at Signal Mountain Lodge. Please respect the Signal Mountain Lodge area, as most facilities are not open to the public at this time.

The 14-mile section of the Teton Park Road will open to public motor vehicle traffic on Sunday, May 1. The Moose-Wilson Road, Antelope Flats Road, and Signal Mountain Summit Road remain closed to vehicle use. All park visitors should respect road closures and look for signs posted near the road regarding any recreational use or access. For information on park roads, visit go.nps.gov/tetonroads or call 307-739-3682. For information about Moose-Wilson Road construction, please visit go.nps.gov/moosewilson.

The paved multi-use pathways in the park are open whenever they are predominately free of snow and ice. Use of the pathway in the park is prohibited from ½ hour after sunset to ½ hour before sunrise. Pets are not permitted on the pathway.

The Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center in Moose will open for the season on Saturday, April 9. It will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For all other opening and closing dates for facilities and services within the park, please visit go.nps.gov/tetonseasons.

Entrance fees are required to enter Grand Teton National Park and recreate on the Teton Park Road. The $35 private vehicle, $30 motorcycle, or $20 individual (by foot/bicycle/ski) fee or applicable passes are available for purchase at the Moose and Moran Entrance Stations, or in advance through Recreation.gov. Credit or debit cards are accepted for payment, as it helps staff be safe, secure, and efficient. For more information about park entrance fees, visit go.nps.gov/tetonfees.

Trail Creek

Grooming Tuesday and Thursday evenings
Last Update: 3/25

Probably Not Today!

The chances of the image above happening today are pretty much nil.  While many of us are looking forward to green grass and summer temps, every once in a while it’s kind of nice to reflect on the cold dark days of winter.

While cold dark days of winter are not happening today at Trail Creek, you can still have a pretty good Nordic ski.  Today’s grooming happened last night with the Husky making the rounds on pretty much every trail.  On that pass it was able to lay down some quite crisp corduroy and classic tracks.  We do have a few holes showing here and there and there are some dirty areas in the woods, but there are also many sections that are skiing very nicely at the correct time of day.  Moose Loop and Animal Farm did receive multiple passes last night.

For the next few days, crust cruising in the fields is an early morning option, the field trails will morph from very fast to slushy as the day progresses, and the shady woods will be at their best in the afternoon.

Look for a quick groom of the fields Friday night followed by a mid-morning Sunday grooming.  Hopefully we can keep things running until the end of the month, we’ll see how the snow holds up and report more in the next grooming report on Sunday.

Groomer’s choice for today is the fields in the morning, Moose Loop in the afternoon.

Teton Co./Jackson Parks & Rec

Grooming Monday-Saturday
Last Update: 3/25

Cache creek and May park have been groomed but both have bare areas or very thin areas. Game creek is in poor shape, expect icy conditions for the first 2 miles then when it warms up standing water in areas. I would recommend avoiding game creek today.

Saturday will be our last day of parks and rec grooming for the season.  I typically would groom the levee and stilson, but conditions are too shallow and poor to groom at these locations.  So instead I am going to do one last groom up Cache Creek tomorrow morning, March 26th.

Saturday Grooming Schedule: Cache Creek

Cache Creek Fat Bike Trails

Last Update: 3/13

I did a pass on all the Cache Creek trails this evening.  Things are holding up well but as the temps get above freezing try to avoid using the trails in the late afternoon.

Shooting Star

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 3/25

Near record temperatures will continue to dominate the forecast over the weekend and with that continue to rapidly melt our snowpack. We’ve been pushing and harvesting snow over the past few weeks in preparation for Pole Pedal Paddle and glad the event is 3/26 as there is not much life left in the track. Reminder that the course will be closed during the PPP event until 11am Saturday morning. We’ll only be grooming the assigned tournament route for Saturday’s event, and the remaining trails will ski slightly differently if you venture out on the track after 11am.

I will update everyone again after Sunday’s groom on if we can continue trail efforts into next week… but based on the future forecast, this weekend might be it for the season. Keep your fingers crossed and enjoy the skiing while the snow lasts!

The forecast has an outlook for incredibly warm temperatures that will not be conducive to riding singletrack mid-day. If you’re leaving a rut turn around. Thank you for your support.
