Wildlife Wednesday with JH Ecotour Adventures

These grizzly tracks were an exciting and unexpected find for us! Typically, bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem hibernate for about five months, but this is not always the case. Not all bears hibernate, and this is becoming a more common occurrence as our planet warms. In fact, a 2017 study found that for every one degree Celsius that minimum temperatures increase in winter, bears hibernate for six fewer days. According to the study, by the middle of the century, bears could be active for as much as 40 days longer. Be sure to keep this in mind when you’re recreating in the GYE this winter, as carrying bear spray might become a year-round necessity!

With the slightly warmer temperatures and longer days, the coyote mating season has begun. Every morning and evening, these wild dogs serenade us with yips and howls, advertising to each other in the cold winter air. During this time, male coyotes are also particularly aggressive towards one another and are often observed chasing each other across the open spaces of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

Trail Creek

Salute our Hosts!
If you are lucky enough to make it out to Trail Creek today, you might notice some new trails in the Moose Loop/Armin’s area.  If you are an old timer, you will probably guess that one of our major hosts, the Siefferts, are coming for a vacation and that these trails have been groomed to allow them to snowmobile into their cabin.  The green A frame cabin as well as the land under Moose Loop and Armin’s all belong to the Sieffert family.  If you happen to see them on one of your skis, give them a friendly wave as a way of saying thanks for the use of their land that hosts some of our best ski trails.

Those trails along with pretty much every other trail in our extensive network received fresh Husky grooming today.  While it is trying to snow, so far it has only amounted to about a half inch.  However, combining that fresh half inch with the warm temperatures has allowed our groomer to do a quite nice job today.

While Homesite received multiple passes, most woods trails had a single pass with about 30% receiving fresh classic tracks along the way.  The classic tracks in the East Fields with the fresh dusting are skiing well and the Close Field received multiple passes with fresh classic tracks.  All in all skiing is very nice today.

Groomer’s choice for today is Homesite.

Last Update: 2/14

Happy Valentine’s Day! Trails remain in excellent shape, boasting firmer, fast conditions in the morning followed by a slight softening as inversions lift and temperatures reach into the 20s and 30s by afternoon. Snow returns to the forecast over the next few days and will hopefully bring a much needed refresh for the Nordic course, and the Tetons as whole. Storm skiing conditions could exist during the weather system, but we will continue to groom each morning and conditions should be quite enjoyable for Nordic skiing following the potential snow.

Next update will be by Friday, 2/18.
