JHSC Places 5th in Junior National Championships Club Standings
Huge Congratulations to the JH Ski & Snowboard Club student-athletes, coaches and staff for such fantastic results. Our community is so proud of everyone! Way to lead Jackson Hole into the top National rankings in Cross Country Skiing!
Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club (JHSC) Nordic student-athletes competed at the 2022 Junior National Cross-Country Ski Championships in Minneapolis, MN from March 7-12, 2022. JHSC sent a club-record 14 student-athletes to compete in four races: a Freestyle Individual Start distance, a Classic Sprint, a Classic Mass Start, and a Freestyle Mixed Relay.
Memorable performances include U16 student-athletes Lena Poduska and Lucas Wilmot, who both skied to three top-10 finished in the individual events and a top-10 finish in the relay. U18 student-athlete, Kate Brigham earned a 2nd place finish in the Classic Sprint and 10th in the Classic Mass Start. JHSC Alum and University of Denver student-athlete Elijah Weenig had three consecutive top-10 finishes, including 4th in the Freestyle Individual Start, while also pacing his team to 3rd in the Freestyle Mixed Relay.
In addition to these outstanding performances, six other JHSC student-athletes placed in the top 30 over the course of the week and therefore scored points for the club standings. Altogether the results of all 14 student-athletes propelled JHSC to 5th place in the Junior National Cross-Country Ski Championships Club standings.
“We are extremely proud of all the JHSC Nordic student-athletes who competed in Junior Nationals this week. These performances are the culmination of countless hours of training and preparation over many years,” says Nordic Program Director and Head Coach, Will Wicherski.
Bears are Emerging from Hibernation in Grand Teton National Park
On Sunday, March 13, the first grizzly bear sighting of 2022 was reported in Grand Teton National Park. Now that bears are emerging from their dens, visitors and local communities are encouraged to secure attractants.
Adult male grizzly bears typically emerge from hibernation in March, and females with young usually emerge between April and early May. When bears emerge from their dens, they search for food, which often includes scavenging carcasses of animals that died during the winter. Bears may display aggressive behavior towards humans if approached while feeding on carcasses.
“Bear season has begun, how it ends depends on all of us,” said Grand Teton National Park Superintendent Chip Jenkins. “We welcome the community led effort to work across boundaries to protect bears in Jackson Hole, and we need everyone’s help to remove unsecured attractants from the valley.”
As the grizzly bear population continues to expand in the southern end of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, bears continue to disperse outside of Grand Teton. Visitors and local residents should secure all attractants so bears cannot gain access.
-Store all garbage within bear-resistant containers.
-Secure livestock feed, pet food, compost, and beehives.
-If you feed birds during the non-denning season, hang birdfeeders in a way that makes them inaccessible to bears.
-Help your neighbors create a bear-wise community to protect wildlife.

Final Week for JHSC Youth Programs!
How time flies when you’re having fun! First off, unless something completely unexpected happens, this is not the final week of grooming at Trail Creek. However, with Nationals in the rear view mirror and spring just around the corner, our JHSC youth programs are mostly wrapping things up this week. The word is that there will be quite the celebration on Wednesday, complete with a taco truck. Skiing and tacos, how cool is that!
While tacos might be a bit hard to come by today at Trail Creek, you will find plenty of great Nordic skiing. Since yesterday’s grooming another 2-3 inches of snow fell which the Husky was able to make quick work of this morning. With a busy JHSC program day today as well, much of the focus was on the fields with multiple passes and double classic tracks almost everywhere there. The woods weren’t forgotten either with a skate/classic track nearly everywhere with double passes on Moose Loop and Animal Farm.
The forecast had been calling for a possibility of rain later in the week, but the latest iteration is calling for cooler temps and snow which is a really good thing if you’re still looking for some nice Nordic skiing.
Groomer’s choice for today is Moose Loop.

What a difference a week makes! Over the last 7 days we’ve experienced record high temperatures near 60*F and then yesterday a record low temperature of -23*F at our site! Luckily, this recent cold blast delivered 8”-10”+ of much needed snowfall and the trails have been skiing great! Warmer temperatures are forecasted this weekend through Tuesday, bringing the possibility for more snow or rain showers. Looking way ahead, if the temperatures remain “normal”, I would anticipate we can continue to groom the majority of trails through all of March, but this optimism may quickly change if unseasonable warm weather returns. Keep your fingers crossed that mother nature continues to cooperate and we’ll continue to do our best for keeping the trails open as long as possible. Enjoy the skiing this weekend! Next update will be Tuesday (3/15).
