Ever Wondered about the Origins of Grooming for Fat Biking in Jackson?
David Hunger started Teton Mountain Bike Tours in 1991. In the beginning, he focused on mountain biking in the warm months. Before fat bikes came around, David ran winter bike tours on mountain bikes with studded tires, but it wasn’t really going anywhere. Then about 10 or 12 years ago, he got his first fat bike.
“I thought they were crazy right off the bat,” David said. “That’s when fat bikes weren’t really popular, but I fell in love with it and said we gotta do this.”
When he first started fat biking, David’s main purpose was to get more people involved and grow fat biking’s popularity, so he offered a lot of free clinics and demo days.
“It was basically a paradigm shift,” David said. “Everyone [thought] you needed to ride a bike on dirt or pavement, but you can ride a bike year-round if you just switch your bike. Once I got people on a bike, their heads turned, and they thought it was really cool to be riding a bike in the middle of winter.”
Ski for Ukraine
Here’s a way nordic skiers and other athletes can help Ukraine! Join The Ukraine Charity Loppet on Worldloppet.com! This is a virtual event everyone around the world can be part of. You just have to register for an activity and distance of your choice and then do the race whenever you like between March 10th and April 30th. A printable bib appears about an hour after registration, next to your name in the participants list. You can track your race with your smartphone or sports watch (for example, with the we4ski nordiq App) and upload the file after completing. All registrants get a printable starting bib and a virtual diploma shareable on Social Media to show your support. All registration fees will be donated to the Ukrainian Red Cross Society in weekly payments.
After registering, Kim and Jen (below) dressed in yellow and blue and did their own Worldloppet. We hope you’ll join them!

Sunday Snowstorm!
Plain and simple, it’s been dumping this morning at Trail Creek. As of report time about 5 inches has fallen with heavy snow continuing. The forecast winds haven’t been too bad so the snow is pretty much sticking where it falls.
Skiing in nature’s splendor on days such as today is always a treat, you might not go quite as fast as some days, but enjoying all that glorious new snow makes it more than worthwhile.
The national championships have finished up with lots of great results and surely lots of great memories for our skiers and coaches. You can find all the results on this webpage.
Today’s daylight savings time grooming began early this morning and covered nearly every trail. Black Hole, Olympic, Animal Farm and the close field all received double passes and everywhere received a fresh classic track today. Skiing will be a bit on the slow side today with all the new snow, but if you are lucky enough to get out, it will surely be worth it.
Groomer’s choice for today is Black Hole.

What a difference a week makes! Over the last 7 days we’ve experienced record high temperatures near 60*F and then yesterday a record low temperature of -23*F at our site! Luckily, this recent cold blast delivered 8”-10”+ of much needed snowfall and the trails have been skiing great! Warmer temperatures are forecasted this weekend through Tuesday, bringing the possibility for more snow or rain showers. Looking way ahead, if the temperatures remain “normal”, I would anticipate we can continue to groom the majority of trails through all of March, but this optimism may quickly change if unseasonable warm weather returns. Keep your fingers crossed that mother nature continues to cooperate and we’ll continue to do our best for keeping the trails open as long as possible. Enjoy the skiing this weekend! Next update will be Tuesday (3/15).
