Ski for Ukraine
Here’s a way nordic skiers and other athletes can help Ukraine! Join The Ukraine Charity Loppet on Worldloppet.com! This is a virtual event everyone around the world can be part of. You just have to register for an activity and distance of your choice and then do the race whenever you like between March 10th and April 30th. A printable bib appears about an hour after registration, next to your name in the participants list. You can track your race with your smartphone or sports watch (for example, with the we4ski nordiq App) and upload the file after completing. All registrants get a printable starting bib and a virtual diploma shareable on Social Media to show your support. All registration fees will be donated to the Ukrainian Red Cross Society in weekly payments.
After registering, Kim and Jen (below) dressed in yellow and blue and did their own Worldloppet. We hope you’ll join them!
Profiles in Nordic: In Their Own Words -Sean O’Malley
Even growing up in western Massachusetts, in an alpine ski-oriented family, I was aware of cross-country skiing. When I was seven, my grandfather removed the screwed-in metal edges on a pair of well-loved Erhbacher wooden alpine skis and then trimmed them with a circular saw to an acceptable width. We added beartrap bindings and I clucked around in the woods that surrounded our house. They were great – I did not know any better!
A few years later, my father learned of a math teacher at the Putney School in Vermont, named John Caldwell, who also sold Nordic gear on the side. We visited his shop and my father bought enough pairs of skis and boots to outfit all of us kids still at home. I was focused on alpine racing into my teens and my Nordic career remained casual.

March 11 was the last day of grooming in Grand Teton National Park and plowing begins tomorrow Monday, March 14.
Today is the last day of grooming at Turpin Meadow Ranch (3/13). So get out there and enjoy YOUR public lands! As always, please recreate responsibly!

Good Day for the Woods!
The wind is blustery today at Trail Creek, blasting down the canyon and moving snow in a quite steady stream across the fields. But the sun is shining, and the temps are around 40ºF, so in spite of this Chinook day, there are still many opportunities for a great ski!
The Husky was hard at work today, covering nearly every trail. Multiple passes with classic tracks happened on the close field and on Homesite and Suicide with single passes everywhere else. On the everywhere else section, fresh classic tracks were placed where they had drifted over and on the narrower trail sections. It’s actually not drifting too badly as the snow is pretty well stuck, so the fields should skate fine and could become nice if the wind drops.
It looks like a lovely day in Minneapolis at the final day of Nordic racing which is freestyle relay today at the national championships which are currently in progress. Yesterday’s classic distance races resulted in quite a few top 10 finishes.
Finally one of our skiers sent in an image of an elk skull next to some canid tracks on one of our trails. The section in which the tracks are located rarely gets any (illegal) dog traffic, and based on the size, is probably a wolf. Thanks for the very cool image! Those of you tempted to venture out on solo moonlight skis (not really allowed) might want to think twice.

Winter is back! The snowcat was out this morning and the track is perfect! Conditions should be awesome through the weekend. Wax for today: am Swix green, pm Swix blue. Our retail shop is still well-stocked with gear and clothing so come on out and see us!
Our trails and shop are fully open to the public 9am-4pm daily. Please call us in advance to book lessons at: (307) 733-1733. You do not need a reservation for skiing and we do not take reservations for rentals. Please contact us in advance to check availability for off-site rentals.
In our retail shop we still have a small size selection of skate skis and BC skis, but have lots of boots, poles, jackets, pants, gloves, and hats. What a difference a week makes! Over the last 7 days we’ve experienced record high temperatures near 60*F and then yesterday a record low temperature of -23*F at our site! Luckily, this recent cold blast delivered 8”-10”+ of much needed snowfall and the trails have been skiing great! Warmer temperatures are forecasted this weekend through Tuesday, bringing the possibility for more snow or rain showers. Looking way ahead, if the temperatures remain “normal”, I would anticipate we can continue to groom the majority of trails through all of March, but this optimism may quickly change if unseasonable warm weather returns. Keep your fingers crossed that mother nature continues to cooperate and we’ll continue to do our best for keeping the trails open as long as possible. Enjoy the skiing this weekend! Next update will be Tuesday (3/15).

Snake River Sporting Club
Daily Nordic grooming for both “Front Nine” (south side) and “Back Nine” (North side) Nordic Trails
Public access to the groomed Nordic trails is $50 per person per day, with no season passes available. Ski rentals are available at the Sports Shop. Guests must check in at the Sports Shop to sign a waiver and make payment before heading out. The daily pass does not allow access to the Restaurant this season. The clinics that are being offered are for members and lodging guests only.

Our season is winding down folks! The trails are looking as good as they have all year. New classic track was put down the other day and the skiing is very fast for the first part of the day. Our last day of the season is this Sunday(3/13)! So come on out for one more fun ski and delicious lunch before we close down for a couple months.

Targhee’s Nordic trails are groomed Tuesdays, Thursdays & Sat/Sundays. Fat bike/snowshoe trails are groomed regularly but not on a set schedule – the groomer usually waits until after a storm cycle to groom the single track.
Trail day passes are $20 this winter.
Remember, singletracks will be closed when there is more than 3 inches of snow in a 24 hour period.
Alta Track
