On the Blog: Nordic Trails at Grand Targhee

What’s one of Grand Targhee’s best-kept secrets? They have one of the best Nordic trail networks in the area. Whether you want to classic ski, skate ski, snowshoe, or fat biking, Targhee has trails to delight for all. Plus, you can’t beat the excellent snow quality, regularly groomed trails, possibly wildlife sightings, diverse terrain, and scenic views across Teton Valley to the Big Hole Mountains and beyond.

Having Trouble Transporting Your Skis?

Here’s a simple, inexpensive practical solution for transporting skis inside your car!

Transporting skis inside the car has some advantages. Skis are more secure, more accessible, and won’t freeze. Then, on the other hand, they take up space, cause some interior condensation, and in a violent accident might cut your throat.

To minimize that last caveat, I put a cardboard box behind the driver’s seat to keep the skis from flying around. The box also keeps the other back seat open for a passenger and prevents the skis from damaging the upholstery of the driver’s seat.

It works well for us, costs nothing, and can be replaced if it gets wet.

A Brisk Glide
The Husky was groaning almost as much as the Groomer early this morning, as it struggled to wake from a deep, -24 degree sleep. Fortunately, a little patience and coffee was all it took to get back on the trails, heading deep into the woods for a total rework of every trail in the system. Today’s grooming was an almost-universal double pass, pushing out trails that had shrunk since the last snowstorm. Also included were the Stadium, Lower Stadium, Lollipopper Land, and Skyview, plus a cursory attempt at the Nordic X, with hopeful further improvements through the week.

Groomer’s Choice is the East Fields with some warm clothes!

Shooting Star

Last Update: 1/30
A high-pressure system has moved in over the valley providing bright sunshine after the weekend storms bringing an estimate 2 feet of fresh snow.  Expect colder temperatures through Wednesday evening and a return to more regular temperatures Thursday.  Colder temperatures continue to make the snow abrasive and there maybe a crumble like texture in certain areas.  Overall the trails are in good shape and should ski well throughout the week.  Next update will be Friday 2/3.

Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged. All you need to do is visit: GTNPF.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Nordic” in the designation section. There is the opportunity to leave a one time gift or reoccurring monthly donations in any amount.

Turpin Meadow Ranch

The trail conditions are smooth and like new in most places though there have been a couple of brave skiers out in this chilly weather. Our plan is to groom Tuesday afternoon with the Pisten Bully when the temps get warmer with hopes that the snow will be more malleable and less likely to create ice balls in the skate lane.

Turpin Meadow Ranch is open to all for skiing, lodging, dining, Nordic lessons, and tours! Ours is a short season so be sure to plan a visit this winter between now and March 13, 2022. Call the office (307) 543-2000 or visit our website to book your adventure and/or meal!

Please support TVTAP winter trail grooming on your favorite TV winter trails by purchasing a TVTAP Trail sticker  Please remember to manage your dogs and respect dog and wildlife closures. Buy a dog trail sticker, too!

Southern Valley Nordic

Grooming Schedule: Tuesday, Friday & Sunday
Last Updated: 1/29
Skate: Set | Classic: Set
The rolling saga continued this morning. Compacted everything as well as I could but conditions are soft. I was able to set a classic track on yeti’s and the campground portion of campground loop. The campground woods kept trying to swallow the ginzu groomer and after my second wrestling match to get unstuck decided not to struggle with the classic track. The parking is in OK condition. Anything less snow worthy than a Subaru should beware. Have a great Sunday.

No dogs December 1 – April 15.

Teton Reserve Nordic

Grooming Schedule: Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday
Last Updated: 1/28
Skate: Set | Classic: Set
Teton Reserve got close to a foot of snow since the last groom, which required a total reset of the track. I did two passes with the roller and set the classic track. Classic should be pretty good. The skate track is really soft, so skate skiers may want to wait for another groom before skiing this track.

No dogs allowed. Please stay on the groomed trails at all times.
