Profiles in Nordic: In Their Own Words – Scott O’Brien

When Skinny Skis opened its doors in 1974,  it would be one of the best things for the growing cross-country ski community in Jackson, Wyoming. While JH Nordic would serve as an educational resource and JH Ski & Snowboard Club mentored the next generation of skiers, Skinny Skis made sure cross-country skiers were properly outfitted for the trails.

In the midst of their flagship season, the Skinny Skis team is busy both selling and renting cross-country gear. On a cold morning in February, Scott O’Brien managed to find some time to sit down and talk with his friends at JH Nordic.

More Moose Chase Photos

Did you or anyone you know participate in the Moose Chase at Trail Creek Nordic Center last week? If so you will want to check out these high quality photos by Wayne Petsch, a JHSC Nordic parent. He is generous to photograph many of their events. Wayne has just shared his gallery from the Moose Chase with the ski club and hopes all participants get to see these photos. They are so fun, and as always, he says he wants everyone to enjoy them. Please visit the gallery and give Wayne credit for any use/posting of his photos. A huge thank you to Wayne Petsch for these beautiful event photos!

Trip Report: Nordic Skiing & Fat Biking at Turpin Meadow Ranch

The Nordic version of a “Biker Bar”

Went up to Turpin yesterday with my girlfriend Jane G. Despite the cold, it was really fun. We skated the lower loops in the morning, had lunch, then hit the upper trails — she on her classic skis and me on my fat bike.
Talking with Turpin Meadow Ranch’s GM ( and welcoming Chief Host) we learned that TMR is now taking reservations for Winter 2023/2024.
The TMR staff have built an ice bar outside for the holiday weekend. What an energetic, fun group of workers! From Lori I.

Riverside Trail, West Yellowstone

If you are headed up to or through West Yellowstone, there are a number of excellent groomed and skier track trails to explore. The Riverside Trail  provides skiers with access to Yellowstone National Park and provides views of the Madison River. For a groomed trail network , visit the Rendezvous Trails  – both right on the edge of town. From Lori I.

Lena Poduska races at the Nordic Nationals Cup Feb 17-19

Lena, a sophomore on the JHSC Nordic Prep Team, qualified for the Cup in early January with her 7th-place finish in the Classic Mass Start at the US Cross Country Ski Championships. That finish at US Senior Nationals is all the more impressive when one considers that as a junior racer, Lena competed in a pool of 200 athletes, many of whom compete at the collegiate level.

She will race in Jyvaskyla, Finland, from Feb 17–19, and she’s fortunate to be coached there by Nordic Program Director, Will Wicherski, who was already slated to coach for the US Team at the event—it’s a bonus to have her there competing, he noted.

Nordic Pulse: An App for Nordic Skiers

Fresh snow in the forecast isn’t the only exciting thing to come to Jackson Hole this winter—welcome Nordic Pulse technology! Nordic Pulse, a live GPS grooming app, gives you cross country ski trail reports in real time. Essentially, this platform connects Nordic-lovers like us, to a GPS tracker that grooming personnel use as they work on the trails. At JHNordic.com/grooming we have access to this technology. Simply view our website before your next cross country outing, and you will see a variety of helpful trail information.

Trail Creek

Crisp Corduroy

It was a brisk -7 degrees at Trail Creek this morning, which was perfect for making clean, smooth, and crisp corduroy. Skaters especially might want to get out and enjoy it today while it lasts, because the upcoming week is looking glorious! Heavy snow on multiple days should make the groomer’s job more difficult, but the skiing a dream.

Today’s grooming was best-line passes on most wooded trails, with fields trails having the classic tracks reset as needed depending on the drifting, itself largely determined by the angle of the trail relative to the wind. The ski team is off to Bozeman for the weekend, so most of the stadiums were left as they are, but the main Stadium was groomed and looks very nice at the moment.

Groomer’s Choice is Mugs Meadow.

  • Morel Mushroom Foraging in the Tetons
Let’s make lemonade out of lemons.. the lemonade being morel mushrooms and the lemons being the lingering cold temperatures (snow, sleet, and hail). What comes with so much needed precipitation are morels! Morel mushrooms are fungi that grow in the filtered light of forests. These oddly shaped mushrooms graze the valley floor and make for a fun activity for the whole family. Walking through the woods or floating the Snake River with a keen eye… Read More
