Profiles in Nordic: In Their Own Words – Scott O’Brien

When Skinny Skis opened its doors in 1974,  it would be one of the best things for the growing cross-country ski community in Jackson, Wyoming. While JH Nordic would serve as an educational resource and JH Ski & Snowboard Club mentored the next generation of skiers, Skinny Skis made sure cross-country skiers were properly outfitted for the trails.

In the midst of their flagship season, the Skinny Skis team is busy both selling and renting cross-country gear. On a cold morning in February, Scott O’Brien managed to find some time to sit down and talk with his friends at JH Nordic.

Congratulations Lena Poduska!

Lena Poduska placed 11th today in the Nordic Nations Championships in Jyvaskyla, Finland. This is a BIG deal for a Jackson skier to even qualify for let alone place 11th!

Lena, a sophomore on the JHSC Nordic Prep Team, qualified for the Cup in early January with her 7th-place finish in the Classic Mass Start at the US Cross Country Ski Championships. That finish at US Senior Nationals is all the more impressive when one considers that as a junior racer, Lena competed in a pool of 200 athletes, many of whom compete at the collegiate level.

She was fortunate to be coached there by Nordic Program Director, Will Wicherski, who was already slated to coach for the US Team at the event—it’s a bonus to have her there competing, he noted.

More Moose Chase Photos

Did you or anyone you know participate in the Moose Chase at Trail Creek Nordic Center last week? If so you will want to check out these high quality photos by Wayne Petsch, a JHSC Nordic parent. He is generous to photograph many of their events. Wayne has just shared his gallery from the Moose Chase with the ski club and hopes all participants get to see these photos. They are so fun, and as always, he says he wants everyone to enjoy them. Please visit the gallery and give Wayne credit for any use/posting of his photos. A huge thank you to Wayne Petsch for these beautiful event photos!

Trip Report: Nordic Skiing & Fat Biking at Turpin Meadow Ranch

The Nordic version of a “Biker Bar”

Went up to Turpin yesterday with my girlfriend Jane G. Despite the cold, it was really fun. We skated the lower loops in the morning, had lunch, then hit the upper trails — she on her classic skis and me on my fat bike.
Talking with Turpin Meadow Ranch’s GM ( and welcoming Chief Host) we learned that TMR is now taking reservations for Winter 2023/2024.
The TMR staff have built an ice bar outside for the holiday weekend. What an energetic, fun group of workers! From Lori I.

Last New Moon Night Ski of the Season Tomorrow

Nordic skiing and fat biking isn’t over just because the sun went down! Join the energetic, fun crew at Turpin for a few laps after dark. This will be our last New Moon Night Ski of the season with one more full moon fondue night ski in early March.

Wildlife Weekend

There were some great wildlife sightings this morning! Our resident baby bull moose was spotted taking a nap in Woolsey Woods; we gave him a nice chase before he finally learned to move past the Prometheus School of Running Away From Things and moved sideways about 20 feet to let me pass. Shortly afterwards, a herd of elk were encountered, who were a bit smarter and quickly moved out of the way! While elk are somewhat commonplace in Jackson, with the Refuge right next door, they are quite a rarity elsewhere, and always a fun sight to see, so poke through Outward Bound for a chance at a sighting.

Today’s grooming was a best-line pass across most trails, with double passes on Animal Farm, Black Hole/Boiler, and Olympic. Thanks to a slight inversion, the snow was grooming particularly nicely this morning, and some of the trails had nigh-perfect corduroy; be sure to take advantage before the snowstorm hits tonight!

Groomer’s choice is Black Hole/Boiler.

The skate lane was reset on all trails Saturday. The air has been crisp, the sky partly sunny. For now the trails are hard and fast but there is snow in the forecast! Get your skate skiing and fat biking in before the coming storm makes conditions too soft. The moose are on the loose, the staff is overjoyed, come join the fun and enjoy the glide!

Turpin Meadow Ranch is open to all for skiing, lodging, dining, Nordic lessons, and tours! Ours is a short season so be sure to plan a visit this winter between now and March 13, 2022. Call the office (307) 543-2000 or visit our website to book your adventure and/or meal!

Skate: Set | Classic: Set
Saturday: Plan to smooth out the skate lane and leave most of the classic track as is. I plan to run the ginzu over the classic track a couple of times to chew the snow up before attempting to reset the classic track in the inside loop at the south end and the eastern inside loop out north. Doing this to gain some knowledge for the future. Mother Nature is bringing a big old eraser our way and will soon remove whatever I can or can’t do!
