This past week was mostly sunny with a temperature inversion. Clear, sunny days can trap cold air in the valley making warm air rise. Nice time to get up higher in the mountains. The Idaho side of the Tetons will also be warmer during an inversion so fun to go ski trails on the west side of the Tetons such as Teton Canyon in Alta, Wyoming. Endless options with deep snow, blue skies, and sunshine.
It’s mating season for canines. Most animals mate so young are born in the spring. Canines have an 8-week gestation period, so mating occurs from mid-January to early March. Young are born in April and May.
Coyotes, fox and wolves are wild canines in Jackson Hole. Fox mate a bit earlier but February is an active month for them all. Canines can be found throughout the valley in mixed habitats and being predators, they thrive at this time of the winter as prey becomes more weakened. Wolves have been seen and heard on the National Elk Refuge. Coyotes and fox like to hunt for rodents so often seen out in meadows. Enjoy this active time of the year and stay alert, you may catch a glimpse of a wolf.
Can you feel it? Can you see it? Can you hear it? By mid-February, old man winter begins to loosen his grip and the whisper of spring can be felt. Valentine’s Day means sunshine finally hits the ski slopes of Snow King Resort, our town ski hill. Since it is north facing, the slopes remain shaded until this time of the year. Birds are also being more vocal. Eagles can be seen sitting near nesting sites. Enjoy all the light, sunshine and wildlife in Jackson Hole and keep us in mind for your interpretive connection.

Trip Report: Phelps Lake Cross Country and Snowshoe
Phelps Lake was the perfect destination this weekend for both snowshoers and skiers! The lake is nicely frozen providing the extra bonus of skiing across while enjoying 360 degree views. An extra bonus was provided by three ice-fishermen who demonstrated their skills by showing us their beautiful 15 inch lake trout. -Karen D.

A Brilliant Vista of Crystal and Blue
The clouds have parted and the trails are shining as bright as the sun! Trail Creek glistens with a myriad of colors today; moose and skiers dodge sunbeams as they wander the shadowed trails, occasionally stepping through a meadow before vanishing once again into the cool darkness between the trees. All is well.
Today’s grooming was single, double, or triple-passes of almost every trail. In the open fields, drifting from yesterday’s snowstorm was largely cleaned away, restoring double classic tracks to most of those trails. In the woods, trails were pushed back out, and Homeward Bound has begun the re-canting process, though it’ll be a few more days before it’s as flat and smooth as would be ideal.
Groomer’s choice is the Close Fields.

Our skate Lan was reset this morning with the Ginzu after a slight overnight dusting and it groomed beautifully. The classic tracks are in perfect condition and the skate lane is packed and fast! All single track has been groomed this morning as well. Great day to be out on the trails!

Happy Valentines Day! We woke up to 3 inches of fresh snowfall this morning since lifts closed. For now, we will see more snowfall this morning and afternoon with high temperatures in the 20’s and lows in the single digits. Our next predicted storm cycle is expected to roll through this weekend.
Remember, singletracks will be closed when there is more than 3 inches of snow in a 24 hour period.
Alta Track
