February Nature News

Provided by The Hole Hiking Experience
It has been a low snow year here in Jackson Hole, although stunningly beautiful as always. The month began at 76% of average snowfall. Annual snowfall measured at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is typically 400 inches at 9,400 feet. Reaching average snowfall is very important because most of our annual moisture comes during the winter months. Historically, February is a snowy month and more snow is predicted for the next few days. Temperatures have been warmer than usual which does make life easier for wildlife.

How to Save the Whitebark Pine
Whitebark Pine grows in the northern Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Northwest and is a keystone species in the subalpine zone of the west. It has a nutritious seed that provides food for birds, small mammals, and black and grizzly bears. The survival of the trees reflects the health of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The species is now listed as endangered. Balance in nature is important so decisions should be made to preserve the trees and the health of the forest.

Trail Suggestions
As the snow deepens, it is fun to explore Shadow Mountain in the Gros Ventre Range. You can reach the winter parking area by following the Gros Ventre Road past Kelly. You can always ski up the road, explore the rolling terrain or snowshoe through the meadows as snow accumulates. You can’t beat the views on a sunny day and it is always a great area to look for wildlife. Remember to give them space and make sure to tell a friend where you are going. Enjoy!

Trip Report: Teton Canyon

It was cloudy skies when I started up the nicely groomed classic track at Teton Canyon this afternoon. It was a wet snow pack that made it a bit harder to get a grip with fish scales at the beginning. But as you go up it was perfect and very fast coming out. Though I didn’t skate, everyone I saw was flying along. Excellent day and sighting of a marshmallow on a stick!

Thank you for the reports Kathy G.!

The Beauty of Planica

JHSC athletes Lucas Wilmot and Elijah Weenig continue competing at the 2024 Nordic Junior & U23 World Ski Championships in Planica, Slovenia! Right photo shows Elijah Weenig.

Elijah’s mom writes: “The venue here is absolutely breathtaking. Feels as if ski jumps and Nordic center were built right next to Jenny Lake. The mountains rise up strikingly just as the Tetons do.” – A. Weenig.

Drippy Day!

It’s a rather unusual day, weather wise, today at Trail Creek.  About 3 inches of leaden snow has fallen since yesterday’s grooming.  Throughout the morning the sky has varied between blue sky and heavy snow showers and with a report time temp of 38º, it is making for a steady drip in the woods as the heavy snow burden of the trees melts and releases.  Thankfully, even though the temps are above freezing, the precipitation we are continuing to receive is coming in the form of snow.

You might think that these conditions would make for a day not to ski, but that is very far from the truth.  Today’s extensive Husky grooming covered pretty much every trail with most woods trails receiving a single skate/classic pass and the fields and Shades of Gray receiving multiple passes.  The silver lining of today’s very warm conditions is that the snow surprisingly groomed into some pretty nice ski conditions. Classic tracks are crisp and well defined, just waiting for your klister and the skate lanes are firm and fast.

This afternoon will be busy with a full slate of JHSC programs on snow; however the Prep/Comp team and many Juniors are off to McCall Idaho tomorrow for the third Junior National Qualifier, so practice schedules will be lighter for the rest of the week.

Groomer’s choice for today is Shades of Gray.

The grooming is great with all this snow!! Now is the perfect time to drop off your skis with is for a mid-season wax. This warm fresh snow is notorious for sticking to your skis but with a fresh hot wax you’ll be gliding fast and not sticking!

We groom approximately 16km of track for both skate and classic daily. We have a full retail and rental shop. We offer lessons daily. Call us with questions and to book lessons: (307) 732-4130. To keep our track in pristine shape for skiing we do not allow dogs, walking, snowshoeing, or fatbikes.

Winter returned to the valley this morning, with 4 inches of fresh snow on the track.  The trails remain in good condition with more snow forecasted throughout the day and for the rest of the week.  Despite the current snowfall, skiers may still encounter some thin and settling areas.  Please be aware that the wind may increase throughout the day and drifts maybe present on the course.  Please expect storm conditions throughout the day and week as the forecast predicts snow showers through the evening on Thursday.

  • Trail conditions are early season as thin areas persist.
  • Walking is not allowed.
  • Sled Hill is Open.
  • Classic Tracks are set where snow allows.

About an inch of snow fell over night, I refreshed the skate lane with the ginzu. Snow was falling off and on during this morning’s groom and it’s a fairly warm and wet snow. Overall it’s a beautiful day to be on our scenic trails.

Southern Valley Nordic

Grooming Schedule: Tuesday, Friday, Sunday
Last Updated: 2/6
Tuesday morning: Warm and wet groom. I was able to reset skate and classic on Yeti and Campground loops. Classic turned out well. Skate track turned out decent on Yeti but it’s a bit rough on Campground. Expect soft conditions.

Singletrack: 2/6
Consider other alternatives for your recreational opportunities today. It’s a sloppy mess out there and with these warm temperatures and high moisture content you cannot run low enough tire pressure to not leave trail damaging ruts. Temperatures should start to drop and conditions improve after Wednesday. Please ride in temperatures below the freezing mark. Standby for updates.

Please note the USFS dog closure policy Dec 1st – April 15th at this venue.

Teton Reserve Nordic

Groomed  Sherman Park, reset the skate lane and classic track. Of course the classic turned out nice looking in this sloppy mess of a snow pack. Skate lane is just OK. Expect soft conditions until temperatures drop starting Thursday. Shove in a couple of the bear patches to try to maintain the base. Enjoy what you can while you can.

Driggs School Loops
