March Nature News
Provided by The Hole Hiking Experience
March began with a big snowstorm…within 24 hours, over 30 inches of snow fell in the Tetons and over a foot of snow blanketed the valley. The heavy snow and strong winds created a high avalanche danger, once again. February was a very wet month and snowpack is currently about 90% of average. We have a similar snow depth to last winter, which was one for the record books. The dryness of December and January feels like ancient history.
Spring officially begins on March 19, 9:06 PM Mountain Time. Our local community transitions to spring with the closing of national park roads and local ice rinks and the end of grooming for cross-country skiing. Make sure to check local grooming schedules since each trail has different end dates.
As days lengthen, the natural world responds with buds on the trees, bears emerging from dens and birds returning to the valley. I have yet to hear the Redwing Blackbird but imagine I will hear that shrill any day now.
Calling all adventure seekers: enter to win the Jackson Hole Nordic Winter Trail Adventure Giveaway! Embark on 5 or more winter trail adventures in the Tetons and then tell us about it. Your journey not only enriches our community but could also score you some fantastic prizes like: XC skis, a puffy coat, or a backpack to name a few!

Snowy Cabin Edition!
A month or two ago if you would have asked a Trail Creek skier if the 2024 snowy cabin would be in competition for the best ever, they would have laughed at you. However, after weeks of heavy snow, the March 6th 2024 snowy cabin is definitely a contender for the top 3!
That top 3 contention was helped by the recent foot plus of snow that fell overnight which once again presented the Husky with a mountain of snow to set on its journey around the trails. Today’s grooming was primarily the course for Saturday’s Skinny Skis Wydaho Nordic Race Series Season Finale which is scheduled for 10 AM. This course pretty much all received double passes with fresh classic tracks with additional grooming in the close field and on the Nordic X course.
Temps have finally warmed, moving into the positive Celsius range for the first time in several days. While there has been a lot of fresh snow since yesterday, it groomed nicely and should ski well. Of note, the Husky did drive up to the snowy cabin today for the photo, but upper Homesite was not groomed as it is not part of the course.
Groomer’s choice for today is to ski the race course.

Wednesday: Plan to reset both classic and skate this morning. Track is flat and wide into Reunion Flats, beyond that, still narrower, softer and more off camber in places. Both classic and skate turned out well. Road and parking have not been plowed, narrow, 4wd.

Tuesday morning: I did a few laps with the roller to try to widen the trail. Nick and the Rabbit did an awesome job re-establishing the trail yesterday. Did one pass with the Ginzu to set the classic track on Campground and Yeti. The Yeti cutoff trail is not groomed due to a downed tree. Get out for some skiing before it gets buried again!

Did some rolling last night and this morning. The wind is picking up, it is beginning to snow and the track is drifting in. It is very soft in many places and the skis of the snow machine were leaving som deep ruts. Skiing is not so great right now but we will keep working on it. Thanks for your patience.

The Drift Run, Fat Bike, or Ski
March 8-10, 2024
Pinedale, Wyoming
For the last 100 years Wyoming cowboys have “drifted” their cattle each fall out of the mountains where they go to to the desert for the winter. In this epic event racers experience Wyoming– under Wyoming’s terms–Wyoming style. Choose a discipline–Ski, Bike, Run– then set out to complete the course before mother nature finds a way to finish it for you. It is still very much winter up here in March. The temperatures can be sub zero, the wind can be relentless, and snowfall can be measured in feet.
