“There is no winter without snow, no spring without sunshine, and no happiness without companions.”
-Korean Proverb

We seem to be in an ongoing storm cycle with more to come later this week. Local meteorologist, Jim Woodmency, reports that 2022 was colder, wetter, and snowier than normal. Seems to be our trend for the last 7 years.  https://www.mountainweather.com/2023/01/jackson-trends-colder-wetter-snowier-than-normal/. The word around town is this winter resembles 2017 which was the winter the power lines blew down on the road to Teton Village. Still lots of winter left and March can be a wet month.

Snow piles are high, and movement is tough. As I drive the streets, I see deer all over town. Hard time for the wildlife so be extra careful to minimize any disturbance. Warmer temperatures also make the snow heavier requiring more calories. I would expect high mortality due to this long cold, snowy winter.

As March begins, we will see more changes in nature. Robins have been seen in town and I heard a Cassin’s Finch singing yesterday. Warmer temperatures and longer days stimulate this change and as days lengthen more light penetrates the snowpack.

This light affects the nivean environment or the snow world. Plants and animals both respond. Rodents mass together for warmth for most of the winter. Increased light initiates hormonal changes and they become more territorial so begin to defend the territory from others. The Snow Buttercup, Ranunculus nivalis, which stores energy in its’ bulb will grow at the edge of the snowpack as it seeks the light.

Join Susan Marsh, local author and naturalist, and I to explore the change of season this Saturday in Cache Creek. It’s a free outing offered in conjunction with the Teton County Chapter of the Wyoming Native Plant Society. Sign up is required so shoot me an email to get on the list. Timing is 10-noon and we will travel by snowshoe.  info@holehike.com | 307.690.4453 | www.holehike.com

Exploring Grand Teton on Cross Country Skis

Winter in Grand Teton National Park is a magical time. For the tenth consecutive year, the Foundation is grooming the Teton Park Road Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays (conditions permitting) allowing visitors unparalleled access to the 14-mile stretch of road between Taggart Lake Trailhead and Signal Mountain. The region offers a variety of terrain choices and scenic destinations from half day trips to full day tours—follow the link below for some of our favorites! The last day of grooming for the season will be Friday, March 10!

Giving the Husky a Good Workout
The Husky received a good workout today, as trails had once again been wiped clean by buckets of falling snow. Fortunately, the whiteout conditions from yesterday had passed, and the groomer was a little less likely to fall off the edge today! While there are still some rough edges on multiple pass areas due to the soft snow, for the most part things are looking quite nice, and should make for great skiing.

In other news, the Lollipoppers have been having a great time, relatively recently! They made it all the way back to Déjà vu, exploring the cabin there, which is quite the voyage for little legs. Good job, coaches, and thanks to Coach Cathy for sharing the photos!

Today’s grooming was single passes on mostly everything, with double passes on Woolsey Woods, Moose Loop, Animal Farm, Black Hole, Boiler, and the Old Pass Road Loop. Whew! Tomorrow the focus will be on cleaning up some of the rough edges and grooming out the connectors, some of which were skipped for now.

Groomer’s choice is Black Hole/Boiler.

What is a cross country skier’s favorite fabric?… Corduroy! All of our ski trails are in great condition with a little new snow and attention from the pisten bully. There are some bold moose in Mule Pasture, they didn’t seem to care about the grooming equipment, in fact they were a little curious! The single track was groomed this morning also. If you’re thinking about an excursion to Turpin now is the time!

Turpin Meadow Ranch is open to all for skiing, lodging, dining, Nordic lessons, and tours! Closing day (March 12, 2022) is not too far away so make your plans to come to Turpin soon! Call the office (307) 543-2000 or visit our website to book your adventure and/or meal!

Classic Track: Set | Fat Bike Trails: Closed | Snowshoe Trails: Open
Snow continued falling into the late afternoon yesterday, creating great storm skiing conditions all day long. Light snow and winds will continue throughout the day today. Dress warm and prepare for a breezy afternoon.

Remember, singletracks will be closed when there is more than 3 inches of snow in a 24 hour period.

Alta Track

Grooming Schedule: Tuesday, Thursday, & Sunday

Skate: Set | Classic: Not Set
Mike and I made three passes with the roller on the entire track except the lollipop and library loops which only received two passes. Way soft but maybe it will set up a bit overnight.

Grooming Schedule: Monday, Wednesday & Friday

Skate: Set | Classic: Set

The new snow has been rolled out and the classic track set. Of course, skate skiing is going to be soft, but it should be okay. One more groom and it should firm up nicely. Hopefully, the wind will stay gentle, and the track won’t get filled back in overnight.

Skate: Not Set | Classic: Not Set
Tuesday AM: Just finished rolling all of Campground and Yeti loops. Felt more like a plow than a groomer today – it was deep! Did not set classic or skate tracks; just trying to pack down the new snow. As of 10 am the trailhead is not plowed. Enjoy the powder!

No dogs December 1 – April 15.

Teton Reserve Nordic

Skate: Set | Classic: Set
Spent several hours packing all the new snow with the roller. I was able to reset the skate track and classic check with a ginzu. It’s not the best but I’ll be back tomorrow morning.

No dogs allowed. Please stay on the groomed trails at all times.

Singletrack: Set
8:10PM Tuesday – Just finished grooming BPA, Upper/Lower Lady Slipper. A lot of snow has fallen but I do expect it to set up. Pay attention to your tire pressure. Snow banks are getting tall and the moose are still mingling down low at the junction with Bender. Be patient as the rest of the trails get caught up. Enjoy!

No dogs December 1 – April 15.
