February Nature News
Field Facts
- Both Bald and Golden Eagles can be found in Jackson Hole during the winter months.
- Bald Eagles develop the white head and tail feathers when they are about 5 years old.
- Never let animals lick your vehicle. It can make them sick and saliva spreads disease.
Backcountry Tips
- Both drier lint and cotton balls with vaseline will you help start a fire in the backcountry. Consider adding these to your backcountry pack to use with a couple fire sticks. Aluminum foil works well as a base.
- A black bear was recently caught on video at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Teton Village. Seems the mild winter has at least one bruin active. Reminder to carry bear spray.
Trail Suggestions
As the snow deepens, it is fun to explore Shadow Mountain in the Gros Ventre Range. You can reach the winter parking area by following the Gros Ventre Road past Kelly. You can always ski up the road, explore the rolling terrain or snowshoe through the meadows as snow accumulates. You can’t beat the views on a sunny day and it is always a great area to look for wildlife. Remember to give them space and make sure to tell a friend where you are going. Enjoy!
Trip Report: 5 XC ski outings in 3 days in Jackson Hole
Submitted by K.O.S
I did 5 XC ski outings in my 3-day trip, plus an afternoon alpine ski at JHMR.
SKI 1: Gray Meadow with a friend (small loop), bigger loop solo. “Free is a good price.”
SKI 2: Taggart Lake Trailhead north out and back, visit to Fabian cabins on return. Magical day of blue sky and clear views of Cathedral Peaks, with JH Ecotour Adventures. Our guide, Ryan, was excellent with multiple moose and local wildlife sightings. 10.0 rating.
SKI 3: Ladies skate ski at Teton Pines. Love the access from Teton Village via the START Bus, stop at Persephone West, then XC ski.
SKI 4: GTNP – Moose-Wilson road trail out and back from Granite Canyon trailhead. Crusty snow was dicey on skinny skis though easy access from Teton Village and peaceful setting. Creek crossings were beautiful.
SKI 5: Shooting Star Nordic Center. Excellent grooming and soft late afternoon conditions. Great views of the valley and back toward Jackson Hole Mountain. Beautiful houses in here too.

Your Friday to Ski!
After a bit of a rough day yesterday, the snow is coming along nicely today at Trail Creek. The rain and heavy wet snow from earlier in the week had frozen literally “like ice” yesterday morning. The Husky did its best yesterday to break it up; stable cool temps, additional Husky passes today along with a dusting of fresh snow, and things are coming around nicely as of grooming time. Morning skiers were wearing smiles today. With a light practice schedule this afternoon, it would be a great day to make some laps at Trail Creek!
Today’s grooming covered nearly every trail. In the woods Moose Loop, Animal Farm, and Olympic received multiple passes with most everything else receiving a single skate/classic pass. The fields received multiple passes with fresh classic tracks. One final grooming mission was the reworking of the beaver pond hill today. The normally camera shy elk herd was a little mellower than usual this morning, allowing a distant photograph which shows at least 11 of our fellow Nordic trail users. Cranky the moose was spotted as well this morning, still sporting the antlers he is so proud of. He did seem more or less calm, but if you see him, you might want to go the other way.
IMD racers are inspecting courses in McCall, Idaho today in preparation for the weekend’s final IMD Qualifier. Results will be available tomorrow on the event website, go racers!
Groomer’s choice for today is the Beaver Pond area.

Grooming will be ongoing through 11am this morning. Yesterday’s very wet snow left a stubborn ice layer on the trails, which requires aggressive blade work and slower operating speed. The finish product will be on the more crumbly-side as this icy profile isn’t very pliable. Conditions should improve over the next several days as colder more stable temperatures return.
