WILD NATURE

by Cathy Shill, founder of The Hole Hiking Experience

“Over the winter glaciers, I see the summer glow. And through the wind-piled snowdrift, the warm rosebuds below.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Springtime is the land awakening! I notice the changes in Jackson Hole by sight and sound. We align with longer days and feel supported by increased light as motivation. This increased light spurs changes in all of nature. The stronger light wakes bears, and the first grizzlies have been seen in Yellowstone. Additional light causes hormonal changes so antlers grow, rodents’ mate and birds return to the valley. The sound of nature increases with the trill of the red-wing blackbird, the song of the chickadee, and rushing water.

Corn snow is a sign of spring. Corn snow forms when we reach the point in the season where air temperatures continue to drop below freezing at night and above freezing during the day. Recent weather created ideal conditions.

As winter releases its grip on the landscape, animals will begin to move to summer territories. Remember, March and April are vulnerable months for large animals such as deer, moose, elk, and bighorn sheep. They burn stored fat to survive winter, so they are weakest at this time of year. Fortunately, some grass is turning green on south and east-facing slopes.  Remember, seasonal winter closures that protect habitat for animals continue until May 1.

Enjoy this change of season. For our team of naturalists, we will offer winter tours until April 7 then take a break for snow to melt and trails to dry. The summer hiking season begins May 6. As the season ends, I am grateful that we had a wet March and snowpack is currently 99% of average which makes for happy flowers and sets the stage for all the beauty to come.

2023-2024 Silly M-W Teewinots!

When it comes to having fun on a pair of Nordic skis, nobody beats the Teewinots!  Pictured above is the 2023-2024 Monday Wednesday Teewinots, this image being them striking a silly pose.  Coach Libby and crew, while building basic skills in these up and coming skiers, have also spent lots of time playing an amazing array of games and activities throughout the season to make it all lots of fun.  Hopefully we will see all of you Teewinots back next year!

You however, don’t need to wait until next year to have a great Nordic ski.  Late in the day yesterday the Husky was hard at it, covering pretty much every trail in the system.  Most trails received a single skate/classic pass with the Close Field receiving multiple passes and lots of additional funky grooming in preparation for the big race (volunteers still needed) March 30-April 1.  Conditions will be very firm this morning, softening as the day progresses, depending of course on the amount of sun exposure.

It does look like our current run of perfect bluebird days will be winding down with a return to winter next week.  However, we are all Nordic skiers and winter is a fantastic thing!  Next grooming will most likely be Friday evening.

Groomer’s choice is to check out Faceplant which is still skiing nicely but might not be around for long depending on how things melt.

Grooming Daily – Final Day Sunday
Last Update
: 3/20
The best classic skiing is between 11am and 1pm due to the typical end of season freeze/thaw cycle. The best skate skiing is right after our morning groom!

The track closes at sundown on Sunday because the golf crew will begin clearing snow and working after that. There isn’t much time between our closing date and the opening date for golf and there is an incredible amount of work that happens to get the course ready to open.

Evening grooming will begin at 5:30 pm and all skiers need to be off the trails at this time. Thanks for everyone’s cooperation/understanding and we’ll keep you posted if any further issues arise.
