February Trail of the Month: The ‘Hidden Lakes’ of Grand Teton National Park
Before the temperatures begin to warm up, and the snow gains more heat over the longer days of the coming weeks, now is the time to go for a classic ski tour to see one of the many frozen lakes in Grand Teton National Park. With average February temperatures in the Tetons ranging from 5 to 33 ℉, the chill still lingers, presenting an ideal opportunity to explore the serene beauty of the region’s frozen, thus hidden, lakes. We’ve put together all you need to know about 4 classic ski tours to “hidden lakes” in Grand Teton National Park.
Sunday Reading: The 50th American Birkebeiner in Cable-Hayward, WI.
Ben Theyerl, a third generation Birkie skier and Crested Butte Nordic coach, shared his reflections on the history and celebration of the Birkie in Faster Skier.
“The Birkie was an idea with true intentions: to allow its participants to discover qualities within themselves through the medium of skiing. … Through the many seasons of our lives, the Birkie has become communion: a gathering ‘round for vespers each winter. In skiing that fifty kilometers, we’re reminded that the winter can be warm, it can make you shed a few layers, and that the harsh winter cold is no match for the warmth that human souls, pointed together in the same direction, can provide.”

Breezy but Beautiful!
Yes there’s a bit of a breeze, but the snow’s not going anywhere, the temp is closer to 40 than 30, and sunshine is in abundance, it’s another great day to ski at Trail Creek! Today’s Husky grooming was a universal reset of every trail. Most woods trails received a single pass with most classic tracks being reset on that pass while most field trails received multiple passes with fresh classic tracks. While early morning grooming was a bit crunchy and you might see evidence of that from place to place, early morning shady area grooming with later warming temps resulted in all in all favorable conditions.
The Wyoming High School Championships are wrapping up today in Casper, while Wyoprep will most likely report; you can see live results on the High Plains Nordic site. IMD racers are continuing to race at the National Tune-up in Bozeman, results are streaming from the event website.
We’re entering Nordic team photo season, the above image is the Tuesday Thursday Teewinots, a great looking bunch of skiers! Word is that administration is anxiously waiting for the rest of the team photos coaches!
Groomer’s choice for today is the sunny Close Field.

It was a great day for a race! The Alta Vista Skiathlon course was buzzing with excitement till around 1PM. Racers skied one lap on classic skis and a final lap on skate. Huge thanks to the Snow Rabbit for prepping the course earlier in the week so we could hone it in with snowmogroomers last night. With the help of a full moon, we attacked the course with dueling Ginzus and were able to grind up the old firm snow and set a pretty sweet classic track. The course was wide, level and ready for race day. Enjoy!
