Daily Trail Report Spring Schedule

As winter trail grooming is wrapping up, the JH Nordic Daily Trail Report will be transitioning towards a spring schedule which means beginning Monday, April 3 updates will happen a little less frequently. You can expect emails Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays until April 15 (which will be the final winter trail post of the 2022/23 winter season). You can still stay up to date on opened groomed trails and last grooming dates anytime by checking the grooming page. On May 6th we will shift to monthly JH Nordic Trail Reports delivered on the 1st Saturday of each month until late November when snow covered trails return!

April 7, 2023 Nature Update

Provided by Cathy Shill founder of The Hole Hiking Experience
https://www.holehike.com/

There is no winter without snow, no spring without sunshine, and no happiness without companions.
-Korean Proverb

As winter grooming ends and the ski resorts close, energy in the valley changes. It feels as if winter is over, and we look ahead to a busy summer. Regardless, snow is deep and lots of winter adventures to be had.  April and May can both be cold and wet as we dance between seasons. It often feels to me that we go from winter to summer and seem to skip spring.

As April begins, the feel of spring is more apparent. Longer days and strong sunlight change the landscape. Snow is deep in the canyons but the buttes near town have some exposed ground on their south and east facing slopes. The sounds of nature are also changing. If you walk on the bike paths south of town, you may hear red-winged blackbirds or meadowlarks singing. Male mountain bluebirds light the sky with their brilliant blue feathers. Red tail hawks now soar over the valley. So fun to go out and explore at this time of year.

Temperature and weather will rule the month. If temperatures freeze at night with sunny days, the corn cycle could begin and you can’t beat touring on the soft but firm snow.  Remember all this snow will help our meadows and the 1000+ species of plants ready to burst forth when conditions are right.

Enjoy this quiet time in our valley. April is the time to enjoy the paved inner park road in Grand Teton Park before vehicles are permitted on May 1. May highlights include the Elk Antler Auction and Old West Days. Our winter touring season is ending to allow trails to dry. In May we hit the trails so share signs of spring, wildlife and much more. We hike on forest land so you can’t beat connecting to a spectacular, quieter side of Jackson Hole. info@holehike.com 307.690.4453

Trip Report: Taggart area spring exploration: cottonwood creek river bottom

We went to Taggart trailhead to check out the crust. Instead, we found 3-4 inches of wind-packed fresh snow on the surface. Not ready for crust-cruising, but beautiful to ski through. With Teton Park road open up to Jenny Lake, there are many fun options to bike, walk the road, and nordic ski (classic for now, skate and classic once the crust sets up)! Enjoy the sunshine and deep blue skies!

Spring Season Kicks Off with Partial Opening of Park Road to Recreational Activities

he Teton Park Road between Taggart Lake Trailhead and Signal Mountain Lodge will partially open to activities such as walking, biking and skating beginning Friday, April 7 at 9 a.m. Visitors will be able to recreate on approximately four miles of the road heading north from the Taggart Lake parking lot to Jenny Lake junction. In the northern part of the park, visitors may also access approximately five miles of the Teton Park Road from Signal Mountain Lodge to the Scenic Drive junction. For safety reasons, visitors are reminded to avoid going beyond the barricades marking the closed sections of roadway. Once the entire road is open, the park will issue notifications on Facebook and Twitter. The 14-mile section of road will open to motor vehicle traffic on May 1, weather permitting. Please use caution, as snow and ice may persist on some sections of the road creating slick conditions. Visitors should also be alert for park vehicles and heavy equipment that travel this road as spring opening operations continue.

In Grand Teton, Moose-Wilson Road road closure begins April 10

Nordic skiers who love to ski to Phelps Lake or LSR Preserve from Granite Canyon trailhead parking area need to get out this week! Grand Teton National Park will close the road between Granite Canyon trail head and LSR Preserve entrance starting April 10th, to resume construction of the Moose-Wilson Road upgrade.

Skiers and snowshoers (as long as the snow lasts) and eventually hikers can access both locations via the north from Moose.

JH Ski Club Nordic Masters Ski Clinics – Take the Feedback Survey

In their 4th season, the JH Ski Club Nordic Masters Skate and Classic Ski clinics continue to be a popular way to improve one’s technique, meet fellow skiers, receive some personal ski coaching.

If you attended the Clinics this winter, in previous winters, or are interested for next year, the JH Ski Club Nordic Masters coaches would value your input.

Will, Scott H, and fellow coaches would greatly appreciate hearing your feedback, so they can continue to deliver high quality, fun Nordic Masters clinics and improve every year. Please fill out this survey. They will randomly select 20 surveys to win a JH Ski Club or JH Nordic buff.

Wanna Find A Great Trail?

While grooming ops have ended for a lot of beloved Nordic areas winter is still hanging on. This means more opportunity to get out on your BCXC skis, snowshoes, or crust cruise if your timing is right. The options are kind of endless right now, but where does one go? Short answer: anywhere the snow covers. We recommend that you start by heading to the JH Nordic website where there are over 100 trails mapped and described on the trails section! From there you can choose your own adventure; you might even surprise yourself by finding a new place to explore.

Trail Creek

Grooming has Ended for the Season
Last Update:
3/31
Thanks For A Beautiful Season!
It’s been a beautiful day, and a beautiful season. Near-record snows have kept us going in perfect condition far beyond the average, making every day a gift we should truly stop and take a moment to appreciate. Alas, all good things must come to an end, and today, Trail Creek had its final grooming of the season. The last of the signs and markers were pulled last night, leaving Trail Creek clean and unblemished. A few signs were lost under the snow, so if any start to pop out later in the season, please bring them back up to the cabin; it would be much appreciated!

Today’s grooming was a near-total double pass over all the trails in the system, the Husky doing its utmost to bring every single trail to perfection before entering its long hibernation over the summer. This includes Woolsey Woods, Moose Poop Loop, Moose Loop, Déjà vu, Animal Farm, Black Hole, Boiler, Mugs Meadow, the East Fields, and the Close Fields. Take advantage of it while you can, there’s an unbelievable amount of new snow on the way!

A massive thank you to the many, many people who help make grooming at Trail Creek possible!

  • The Coaches, who help introduce new generations to the joys of Nordic skiing.
  • The ski teams, who put in enormous effort to be the best they can be.
  • The people who work behind the scenes, building the framework we need to function.
  • The donors, who provide the resources needed to make Trail Creek a success.
  • The landowners, who generously allow us to use their property.
  • The volunteers, who offer up priceless time to keep Jackson Hole the skiing treasure it is.
  • And most importantly: You! Without the skiers, none of this would be possible.
  • A special thanks to Groomer 1; without your constant advice and guidance, this season could never have been as good as it was.
  • Thanks to all of you, and we hope to see you next season!

Signing off, Groomer 2(and, by proxy, Groomer 1).
