On the Blog: A Day at Turpin Meadow Ranch

Before the first light dips onto the tips of the cathedral peaks, the day has already begun for Turpin Meadow Ranch’s token Snow Angel, Elee Deschu. Her day usually begins at 5:30 am, firing up the Pistenbully to groom the vast nordic trail system that sits just north of Grand Teton National Park in Moran, Wyoming. She’ll then write a trail report to send to the front office of the lodge that hosts 14 rentable cabins and chalets. Elee and the team at Turpin Meadow Ranch are essential to keeping operations running year round.

Best Apres Ski Spots on the Westbank of Jackson Hole

Trip Report: Eastern Wind River Range

If you are looking for a few new groomed Nordic ski trails (with  a comfortable overnight option), and only 90 minutes south of Jackson, consider visiting the Nordic trails near White Pine Ski Resort, above Pinedale. Set on Bridger Teton National Forest public land, and supported by Sublette County, we appreciated discovering a regional, well maintained Nordic ski trail network, in a beautiful , vast, mountainous area of Wyoming with its own beauty.

A group of friends explored the Elkhart Park Road trail on classic xc skis under sunny skies, with close views of the central Wind River range and distant views of the Wyoming Range.

We stayed 2 nights at the comfortable, family run Lakeside Lodge, half way between Pinedale and White Pine. Our first day, some skied part of the perimeter of frozen Fremont Lake. The Elkhart Park Road trail climbs approx 1000 ft over 4.1 miles going up, then a pleasant downhill run back, with excellent classic and skate grooming. Dog friendly, and very few other skiers.

There are 2 other Nordic trail loops near White Pine, In beautiful valleys, with rolling terrain ( and some decent uphills!) Note that the Lower trail loop, Kelly Park Loop, allows dogs and fat bikes, while the Upper Loop trails do not.

We stopped at Pine Creek Cafe in Pinedale for some excellent expresso coffees before driving home.

Everyone enjoyed the adventure of discovering new trails and beautiful Wyoming landscapes relatively close to home. And supporting and respecting another winter trails community with responsible recreation.

When you do visit Nordic and winter trails set on National Forest public lands, please be a good steward as well as consider supporting their maintenance via donation. We encourage you to visit Friends of Bridger Teton: https://www.btfriends.org/ and the Sublette Trails Association: https://www.sublettetrails.org/winter-trails

Trail Creek

A Fresh Start!
More news of success from our local ski teams! What an impressive performance! Thanks to Rob Murphy for the photo; now they’ll need to return home and practice for the next race, the Moose Chase!

Fortunately, it was a perfect start to race grooming; four to six inches of snow fell across Trail Creek last night, creating a perfect bed for the new race course, which groomed in very well across many of our trails. The current race course covers most of the wooded trails, with the exception of Woolsey Woods. In addition, the East Fields have been groomed for a warm-up loop, with some slight alterations for the Moose Chase; there may be slight tweaks as the week goes on, so keep your eyes peeled! If you don’t like it today, you may like it tomorrow.

Groomer’s choice for today is a preliminary ski on the Moose Chase course!

Shooting Star

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 2/6
The past 7+ days brought us deep snow followed by very frigid temperatures. This combination makes for a crumbly and not very pliable snow profile. GCM recently has been doing aggressive blade work and grooming to assist with releveling the track after the recent weather events. Due to the snow profile currently being less pliable and crumbly, skiers may see cleats marks or voids that aren’t filled in. Most of the voids are esthetic and won’t impact skiing. However, during this transitional snowpack, there could be an occasional awkward spot next to tight corners or where heavy drifts routinely occur. Please pay attention to Wednesday’s weather, as new cold front will push through bringing breezy/windy and drifty conditions. Overall, skiing should continue to be very enjoyable this week with calmer weather returning Thursday. Enjoy! Next Update will be Friday.

Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged. All you need to do is visit: GTNPF.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Nordic” in the designation section. There is the opportunity to leave a one time gift or reoccurring monthly donations in any amount.

Driggs

Grooming Schedule: Monday, Wednesday & Friday
Last Updated: 2/6
Skate: Set | Classic: Set

Pretty challenging conditions this morning. The north loop was blown and drifted to the point it was almost completely indiscernible. Especially with the light being so flat. So in general that end is very soft. Everything has been refreshed now though. REMINDER- if your dog is taking the stakes like sticks then PLEASE REPLACE THEM. We can’t find our way to groom without them. Especially on days like today. There are a lot of stakes disappearing. Thanks!

Groomed early Friday evening so the track could set up overnight. Buffed out the skate lane. Reset the right side classic track but it came out kind of crumbly. Decided I could not improve the left side classic track so I left it as is. Should be great skiing!
