Jackson Hole Nordic Alliance’s Nancy Leon is a community connector
Our very own Nancy Leon was interviewed by KHOL 89.1 recently to discus building a winter sports network and the upcoming annual event at Turpin Meadow Ranch.
Jackson Hole may be best-known as an alpine skiing destination, but the Jackson Hole Nordic Alliance wants to ensure that residents are informed and supported for bevy of alternative winter activities. The organization’s website, JHNordic.com, is a community-oriented resource designed to identify, map, describe, and share all the trail information on the extensive Nordic skiing, fat biking, and snowshoeing in the Jackson Hole, Teton Valley and Greater Teton region of Wyoming and Idaho.
TVTAP Winter Trails Challenge is Back!
It’s the 3rd year in a row for the Winter Trails Challenge, so I think we can officially now say it’s a thing. Get your team and your winter stoke ready…it’s time to log some miles.
So what is this Winter Trails Challenge?
It costs Trails & Pathways more than $50,000 to groom and maintain Winter Trails in a season. While your purchase of a Winter Trails Sticker helps, we need to fundraise for the bulk of the budget so that we can keep that corduroy fresh for your snowshoes, classic skis, skate skis and fat bike.

“And now we welcome the new year. Full of things that have never been.” -Rainier Maria Rilke
The New Year began with torchlight parades. Both ski resorts in Jackson celebrate the New Year with a parade of skiers carrying a torch of light down the mountain. Quite magical and a fun tradition in our small town.
Weather patterns have mellowed this week with some light snow and seasonal temperatures. Snowy trend continues with Friday being the best chance for accumulation. I compare a few weather sites. I found a new one for snow updates- https://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/Jackson-Hole/6day/mid. If you have a favorite, send me an email. I enjoy new resources. cathy@holehike.com.
The American Dipper can be found in Jackson Hole all year. It is a favorite bird of mine that bobs by the shore and dives into the water to walk on the bottom. It bops to resemble turbulent water to hide from predators and it walks on the bottom to forage for insects. I often see them in Flat Creek in Jackson and Granite Creek near Granite Hot Springs. They prefer cold, clear water. In the winter, they may roost under a bridge to get out of the elements. They are fun to watch so when you are near clear, turbulent water and by a bridge watch the bank and you may see the American Dipper doing its’ thing.
It’s time for our annual Nordic Day at Turpin Meadows. We are all super excited since we have had to cancel the last two years. It’s this Sunday, January 8 so come check out all things Nordic. I will be near the snowshoe tent so come say hi. Super fun day so join the JH Nordic Alliance for the 5th annual Free Ski, Fat Bike and Snowshoe Day. Here’s a link and you can register online- https://jhnordic.com/events/jhnordic-5th-annual-free-ski-fat-bike-snowshoe-day-turpin-meadow-ranch/.
We offer nature tours daily to enhance the experience and connect to the natural world. Snowshoeing is winter hiking so caters to all levels and you can’t beat winter solitude. www.holehike.com 307.690.4453

Diminishing Strides to Lengthening Strides!
The left photo from Coach Libby is from yesterday’s practice where she reported “Here are a few photos of Teewinot athletes today playing a game called Diminishing Strides in which they practice balance and lengthening glide in classic technique”. The next photo shows what happens when you take those beginning diminutive strides and turn them into speedy world class strides as one of our fastest skiers competes at the Nordic Championships in Houghton Michigan.
Coach Luna reported, “I got a photo of Lena Poduska today, she qualified for the Junior heats in the national championship classic sprint, awesome skiing!” It’ truly great that we have awesome skiing going on from the smallest to the most advanced, way to go coaches and skiers.
You too can take some Nordic strides today if you are lucky enough to come out for a ski. The Husky has been hard at it today, ensuring plenty of groomed snow on which to make those strides. Pretty much every trail received at least one pass today. Yesterday’s classic tracks are still mostly pristine and mainly touched up in narrow sections or where heavily utilized. Olympic and Animal Farm did show a lot of tracks from practice yesterday so were totally reworked. Skate lanes ended up being the main focus in most sections and are really nice.
As of 11 AM a little light snow was falling, but only a trace had been recorded so far even though a leaden sky has been the rule today. On the right is one more photo from Coach Libby.
Groomer’s choice for today is Olympic.

We got a few inches of snow since the last groom. I rolled it out and set the classic track. Skating will be soft but good. Sorry, the roller left clumps of snow in the track, but it is just fluff. Not quite enough new snow to set a deep classic track all the way around but most of it should be good. Enjoy!
