Watch out for Cranky!
The moose count has been a bit on the short side so far this winter, hopefully just due to the low snowpack and not a lack of moose.  However, we did have the first bull of the season make an appearance today and he seemed to be a bit on the feisty side.  As winter wears on they tend to mellow and just focus on eating, especially after the antlers drop, but this guy was galloping around and actually chased the Husky for a while.  What he would have done with it if he caught it, who knows, but still if you see a bull in the near future, you might want to give him a wide berth.

Weekly Schedule (800x288).jpg

Looking ahead to this week’s schedule, while practices will be very busy, there is no youth racing scheduled for the upcoming week.  Master skiers and gung ho youth skiers do have an opportunity to ski in the Boulder Mountain Tour, one of the region’s epic Nordic races, on Saturday.  Speaking of epic races, the Moose Chase is just around the corner on February 17th, keep training and get your registrations in!

Today’s Husky grooming took advantage of the moderate temps and covered pretty much everything, including some of the out of the way places utilized on busy practice days.  Classic tracks were reset through the fields and on narrow woods trails.

You might notice in the chart above that we have some crazy warm temps headed our way in the next few days.  In order to preserve the snow base until the next round of cooler temps and snow arrives, grooming might be on a lighter schedule for the rest of the week.  The call to groom will be based on analysis of current conditions and will be posted whenever it happens.

Groomer’s choice for today is to enjoy the warmth and nice conditions in the fields (and watch out for Cranky).

Shooting Star

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 1/29
Warmer temperature will continue throughout this week with the weekend forecast becoming cooler and potential snow showers starting Friday.  The sled hill will continue to be groomed only as needed due to the thin snow profile.  We will continue to assess and adjust grooming as conditions develop during the week.  With the current weather outlook, please anticipate areas that will continue to settle, with potential for grass and brushy areas to emerge. Skiers may encounter choppy sections on the track also. Our grooming schedule and methods may shift to preserve the track’s lifespan during the week. Next update will be Friday, February 2nd.

  • Trail conditions are variable and thin areas persist.
  • Walking is not allowed.
  • Sled Hill is Open. Grooming will be as needed.
  • Classic Tracks are set where snow allows.

Turpin Meadow Ranch

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 1/29
The skate lane is smooth, the classic track is definitely not pristine but tracks are still deep. The freshest classic tracks are in the hills. There are lots of things to see out on the trails, especially in the hills (tracks, scat, and areas where critters have bedded down). The single track trails are riding great.

TMR is open to the public daily for skiing, meals, Nordic lessons, and tours! Call the office (307) 543-2000 or visit our website to book your adventure! Check out our live webcam for current conditions.

Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged. All you need to do is visit: GTNPF.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Nordic” in the designation section. There is the opportunity to leave a one time gift or reoccurring monthly donations in any amount.

Groomed late Sunday night. It was still pretty gloppy after todays warm up but should freeze overnight. The track is smoother than it was Sunday but a little rougher than usual from sticking to the groomer. It should still ski well early. It would be best if not used in the afternoon once it warms up. Hopefully colder temps and snow return soon.

Please pick up your trash and dog pop with the supplied Mutt Mitt station.
