Trip Report: Southern GTNP Snake River Dike

An easy, highly convenient backcountry ski tour on flat terrain starting at Granite Canyon trailhead, and skiing along the Snake River dike in southern GTNP out to LSR preserve. Bring wider (65mm) classic cross county skis, water, light snack, sunscreen, and layers to take off or add.

A small amount of route finding to reach the dike (skier tracks to follow). We experienced the beauty of winter solitude, saw a moose browsing in the willows on the edge of the river, wide open views of the Tetons and Snake river. We started at 9am at 1 F, and quickly shed a layer, warming up from skiing. A wonderful place to explore, shared with friends!

When You Go Looking For Nothing, You Can See Everything

Trail Creek

Last Update: 1/26

The Moose Chase Returns!
In just over two weeks the legendary Skinny Skis Moose Chase returns to Trail Creek!  After a bit of a short hiatus, once again you will be able to have an amazing February race/tour through the woods at Trail Creek with all of your Nordic friends.  The format will be slightly different than in past years with a few of the nastier hills being bypassed, but it should still be a great time.  Get your registrations in now so you won’t forget!  All the information is on the website.

Bridges.jpg

The grooming department received another great update from Coach Libby yesterday; the Teewinots were working on their technique by playing a game called “moving bridges”.  It looks like fun and they sure left a lot of tracks to be groomed out today by Faceplant.

Speaking of tracks to groom out, there will be one less elk track to groom out after today.  During this morning’s grooming the first indication that something unusual was going on was that there was a set of skis and poles abandoned in the middle of Outward Bound.  Upon closer inspection it was revealed that one of the residents of The Ranch had harvested an elk.  Perhaps the whole herd might decide to head to other places, at least there will be one less set of tracks messing the trails going forward, and The Ranch will have some great elk meat to eat.  The gut pile is on skier’s right going out on Outward Bound.

Finally today’s Husky grooming covered most every trail with multiple passes on Boiler, Lower East Field, and Close Field.  Classic tracks were reset where needed and on narrower sections.  In general you will find some really nice skiing today.  It does look like we have a major snow event headed our way with over a foot expected in the next few days.

Groomer’s choice for today is Boilers.

Shooting Star

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 1/26
Beginning this evening a significant winter storm is forecasted to push through, bringing ample accumulations through early Sunday morning. Skiers should anticipate storm skiing if venturing out on the Nordic trails this Friday & Saturday, as drifting and heavy daytime snow accumulations will likely occur. Depending on severity of drifting, daily grooming efforts may also take longer than normal and likely finish around 10 am.  After this weather system passes, look for calm and colder temperatures to start out next week. Next update will be Monday 1/30. Stay safe and enjoy!

Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged. All you need to do is visit: GTNPF.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Nordic” in the designation section. There is the opportunity to leave a one time gift or reoccurring monthly donations in any amount.
