When You Go Looking For Nothing, You Can See Everything

By Susan Marsh. Courtesy Mountain Journal.
In the woods behind Murie Ranch in Grand Teton National Park, Susan Marsh received a lesson from elk on how to become one with nature. JHTTB Adopts Sustainable Destination Management Plan & Approves Destination Stewardship Council Formation

The Jackson Hole Travel and Tourism Board (JHTTB) held a special meeting earlier today to formally adopt the Sustainable Destination Management Plan (SDMP). The SDMP is the culmination of over a year of development work including a situational analysis, workshops and focus groups, and community engagement activities to identify and address our community’s tourism challenges and opportunities.

The JHTTB also reviewed and approved the formation of a Destination Stewardship Council (DSC).The DSC will serve as the interim advisory body to the Jackson Hole Travel & Tourism Board (JHTTB) for implementation of the Sustainable Destination Management Plan (SDMP). The DSC will be composed of a network of individuals and organizations that are critical to implementation of the SDMP’s strategic initiatives.

Trail Creek

A Blank Slate!
Believe it or not, less than 24 hours ago there were very distinct Nordic ski trails in the image above.  Take a foot of fresh snow and dump it across the terrain and everything pretty much just disappears.  Never to fear however, the Husky has been hard at it today, doing it best to keep our trails present and skiable.  Today’s grooming did cover pretty much every trail with at least one skate/classic pass. Homeward and Outward Bound, Animal Farm, Moose Loop, Armin’s, and the Close Field did receive multiple passes.

The winter storm warning forecast continues through Saturday night with quite a bit of snow yet to come.  Assuming they made it there in the storm, high school skiers are racing in Casper today and tomorrow so after the midday winter sport skiers depart, it should be a relatively quiet afternoon and a great time to enjoy the bountiful snowfall on your Nordic skis.

A note on the grooming for a while to come; your regular groomer had double hip replacement surgery last summer.  While the first one went well, the second one has had issues and needs to be redone in a surgery scheduled for Monday.  For the near term the grooming duties and report are being handed off to his very capable son Gannett who is more than ready to keep things functioning in the grooming world of Trail Creek.  He will be monitoring the grooming email of trailcreeknordic@gmail.com, so if anyone had any suggestions, he would surely appreciate them.

Groomer’s choice for today is Armins.

Shooting Star

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 1/26
Beginning this evening a significant winter storm is forecasted to push through, bringing ample accumulations through early Sunday morning. Skiers should anticipate storm skiing if venturing out on the Nordic trails this Friday & Saturday, as drifting and heavy daytime snow accumulations will likely occur. Depending on severity of drifting, daily grooming efforts may also take longer than normal and likely finish around 10 am.  After this weather system passes, look for calm and colder temperatures to start out next week. Next update will be Monday 1/30. Stay safe and enjoy!

Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged. All you need to do is visit: GTNPF.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Nordic” in the designation section. There is the opportunity to leave a one time gift or reoccurring monthly donations in any amount.
