Slides and Mountain Lion Activity Up Game Creek

Recently an ambassador reported a couple of snow slides about a mile up the Game Creek Trail, from last Friday. There has also been information of potential mountain lion activity in the same area. There have been reports of lion activity for the last couple of months in the Game Creek area. Skiers and those with dogs please be very aware of the surroundings while up on the Game Creek Trail!

Wind, snow, cold and wolves: This year’s 103-mile endurance in the Wind Rivers was extra ‘brutal’

Credit: Wyoming Public Radio
One of the hardest endurance adventure races in the lower 48 is right here in Wyoming, in the Wind River Mountains. Due to an extreme winter storm, this year was the hardest version of the race to date.

It is called ‘The Drift.’ People have 48 hours to complete the 103-mile course, either running, skiing or fat biking on snow.

“The joke you always hear is people say, ‘Well, I don’t even like to drive that far,’” said Darren Hull, the race co-founder.

Racers have to be self-sufficient, meaning they carry about 40 pounds of supplies to survive, either on their back or on a sled. The trail meanders at elevations as high as 10,000 feet in the Wind Rivers, through massive amounts of snow, 40-mile-an-hour winds and sub-zero temperatures.

Trip Report: Alta Track

As seen in the photos, we had a perfect day to ski Alta track! Fresh groom, stunning views of the Tetons, friendly, local skiers and dogs. Picnic in the sun and a tailgate! It is an excellent place to explore and ski, especially on a sunny day! -N.L.

This ski trail meanders through the open rolling farm fields of Alta, WY. There are multiple different loops to explore, and combine with each other to create as long, or short of a ski as you want. If all the loops are skied once you will travel a total of 10 km. There are great views of the Grand Teton and also Grand Targhee Ski Area from most any part of the trail. This trail offers excellent classic and skate skiing on open rolling hill terrain. Dogs are allowed on the trail, but please keep them under control and within voice command. No fat bikes, walkers or snowshoes, please.

Congratulations to the JHSC Nordic Program on placing 3rd in the national club standings, moving up from their 5th-place ranking last season!

We are so proud of these athletes on an incredible season! Come celebrate our Champions today, Tuesday, March 21, at Hand Fire Pizza. JHSC is the evening’s sponsored nonprofit of Hand Fire’s “Pizza for a Purpose”: proceeds from every pizza purchased, dine in and take out, support the Club’s 500 student-athletes.

Grooming Wars Episode V: Winter Strikes Back

Somewhere, somewhen, a groundhog must have poked its head out of its hole, seen a shadow, and scampered right back in, because it seems like we’ve got another week of winter before us. Snow was falling steadily at Trail Creek this morning, already accumulating around three to four inches, with more on the way! Thanks to this bounteous blanket of softly settling snow, trails were looking the nicest they have all week – for as long as you could see them! By the time grooming was concluding, early trails were already covered with several inches of fresh powder, resulting in a fairly soft skiing experience.

Today’s grooming was a single pass through the woods, followed by a more thorough grooming of the fields, including the addition of double tracks on the East Fields. Typically a double pass in the Fields immediately results in enough snow to wipe it all away, so keep your fingers crossed.

Groomer’s choice for today is Déjà vu, and maybe an exciting run down Superplant just above!

Shooting Star

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 3/20
The track groomed out very nice yesterday evening as warmer afternoon temperatures allowed our equipment to cut through the stubborn ice layer that formed from last week’s rain and subzero temperatures. For the remainder of the season, grooming will occur in either evenings or mornings depending on temperatures and storms. Anticipate grooming to occur in the morning time for most of this week, as the forecast is calling for daily snow and rain showers. Please note, in certain situations, such as a very wet rain/snow event, we may decide not to groom to preserve the integrity of trails as the snow base can become unstable causing severe ruts. Springtime brings constant evolving conditions throughout the whole day as massive temperatures swings promotes intense freeze/thaw cycles, creating icier morning skiing and softer, even slushy snow in the afternoon. The track this time of year can also settle out inconsistently while the snow melts during the day creating sunken spots, especially around catch/drainage basins. Skiers may also encounter icy and crumbly snow sections as the track is not as pliable once it makes the spring profile shift. We will continue to do our best working with the everchanging, sometimes extremely challenging spring conditions and update everyone over any noteworthy details as they arise. Enjoy the springtime skiing and soak up those sunny days whenever they pop up!

Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged. All you need to do is visit: GTNPF.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Nordic” in the designation section. There is the opportunity to leave a one time gift or reoccurring monthly donations in any amount.

Deep ginzued the skate track up to the upper campground, much of the time staying well behind a cow moose and calf who were slowly browsing along the edge of the track. These guys did not want to leave the hard packed track and looked pretty tired. Please stay well back from them and watch your dogs. I may not groom the scheduled day on Monday to give them a break.

Trail Etiquette: Please keep your dogs leashed in the parking lot and be sure to clean up after them!
