Responsible Nordic Skiing Looks Like This…

With all of this snow, it’s no wonder we all feel winter will be a little longer this season. Despite what season may be upon us, recreating responsibly is the only way to enjoy the trails in this magnificent place. So here is a friendly reminder the next time you hit those winter trails to leave no trace & know before you go!

Trip Report: Alta Track

As seen in the photos, we had a perfect day to ski Alta track! Fresh groom, stunning views of the Tetons, friendly, local skiers and dogs. Picnic in the sun and a tailgate! It is an excellent place to explore and ski, especially on a sunny day! -N.L.

This ski trail meanders through the open rolling farm fields of Alta, WY. There are multiple different loops to explore, and combine with each other to create as long, or short of a ski as you want. If all the loops are skied once you will travel a total of 10 km. There are great views of the Grand Teton and also Grand Targhee Ski Area from most any part of the trail. This trail offers excellent classic and skate skiing on open rolling hill terrain. Dogs are allowed on the trail, but please keep them under control and within voice command. No fat bikes, walkers or snowshoes, please.

GTNP – JH Nordic Web Cam Views

Even though GTNP’s Teton Park Road is no longer groomed this season, there’s still plenty of snow for some superb non-groomed skiing and stunning views of the highest peak in the Teton Range. Check out the view, weather, and snow conditions before driving to the Taggart trailhead via the web cam on the JHNordic.com home page.

Sunny Sunday!

Congratulations to the JHSC Nordic Program on placing 3rd in the national club standings, moving up from their 5th-place ranking last season!

On Monday, Lena Poduska won the U16 national championship AND had the fastest women’s time of the day in ALL age classes in the 7.5km Classic interval start. She wrapped up the event with another 1st-place finish in Wednesday’s Freestyle mass start and was 3rd in Tuesday’s freestyle sprint. CONGRATULATIONS to Lena on this incredible end to an already impressive season, following on her 11th-place finish at the Nordic Nations Cup in February.

See complete event results HERE.

It’s looking to be a beautiful Sunday for skiing! Crystal-clear blue skies make for a wonderful skiing experience, if you can fight off the cold. A warm, crackling fire is just the ticket to warm up those cold digits, and Trail Creek has a fire going every morning in the cabin, so if you’re on the verge of frostbite, be sure to stop in and defrost.

Today’s grooming took place last night, in anticipation of very cold temperatures last night leading to a potentially mediocre groom today. Instead, the warmer snow and fading sun were teased into providing beautiful bounteous corduroy in a single best-line pass of most trails in the system. They might be very hard early on, so especially for wooded trails, consider giving them a little more time to soften to ensure you get the best experience.

Groomer’s choice for today is a heartrate-boosting sprint around the sprint loop!

Shooting Star

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 3/19

The evening groom last night was mostly successful, however grooming conditions continue to be very challenging due to the snow profile’s very unusual icy and settling profile. Hole’s 5, 7 & 8 will have a few rougher stretches caused from unstable snow. Conditions pending, we will be working on smoothing out this area after 9:30am once the profile loosens up.  Evening grooming will occur slightly earlier today at 5:00 pm and skiers need to be off the trails by 6pm. Thanks, and we’ll continue to do our best working with these fluctuating conditions.

Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged. All you need to do is visit: GTNPF.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Nordic” in the designation section. There is the opportunity to leave a one time gift or reoccurring monthly donations in any amount.

Deep ginzued the skate track up to the upper campground, much of the time staying well behind a cow moose and calf who were slowly browsing along the edge of the track. These guys did not want to leave the hard packed track and looked pretty tired. Please stay well back from them and watch your dogs. I may not groom the scheduled day on Monday to give them a break.

Trail Etiquette: Please keep your dogs leashed in the parking lot and be sure to clean up after them!
