First grizzly bear sighting of 2023 in the Jackson Hole area

This is a good reminder for Nordic skiers, fat bikers, snowshoers, and all winter trail users to be bear aware, carry bear spray, make noise, travel in a small group vs alone, and remain alert.

We need your continued help to avoid human-bear conflicts. Early in the evening on March 22, the first grizzly bear of 2023 was observed in Grand Teton National Park. As bears become active this spring, Bear Wise Jackson Hole reminds residents and visitors to secure attractants of any kind and be bear aware.

Adult male grizzly bears typically emerge from hibernation in March, while females with young typically appear between April and early May. The first grizzly bear sighting of 2022 in the Jackson Hole area occurred on March 13 in Grand Teton National Park. When bears emerge from their dens, they search for any available foods and often scavenge animals that died during the winter.

“Though I do not believe that a plant will spring up where no seed has been, I have great faith in a seed… Convince me that you have a seed there, and I am prepared to expect wonders.” -Henry David Thoreau

Spring! In the Tetons, it can mean a wet, snowy month and this March is no exception.  Warmer temperatures have begun to melt the snowpack in town and on southern slopes. Spring break begins so town quiets as locals go on vacation.  I was able to go to Florida where my brother lives to see my mom and spend some time in the sun.  Nice to have a break from this long winter.

With longer days and warmer temperatures, snow begins to melt. Any obstacle in the snow world such as rocks, trees, bushes or a fallen leaf will heat in the sun and begin to melt the snow around it.  The buttes near town now have some exposed ground so look for deer near the bare spots.  As the snow melts, drops of water form and melt more snow. This change to the landscape changes animal behavior. Aspen trees photosynthesize through their trunks so they will be greener at this time of year.  Some spring plants begin to grow at the edge of the snow. It’s the time of the year where winter and spring mix as the snow world begins to change.

Besides the feel of spring, birds return and find a suitable habitat. Bluebirds and red-winged blackbirds have been seen near town.  I have starlings at my feeder enjoying the suet. Robins look for open ground to forage. Magpies carry nesting materials to secure and tidy their nest. They also dance with the weather.

Varying temperatures will change the consistency of the snow so enjoy the firmness in the valley and the powder in the mountains. Each day is new and different as the pulse of life changes. Females may be heavy with young. Wildlife will be found on the roadways. Hard time of the year for them. Be extra vigilant and enjoy the signs of spring. info@holehike.com 307.690.4453

Trail Creek: Favorite Landmark Nearly Buried

It was like cross country skiing in December at Trail Creek today! Snow gently falling over groomed trails, snow covered conifers and aspens, perfect silence of snowy landscapes. One exception: our favorite landmark, Sam the Truck was almost submerged in snow! A rare but happy sighting!

Blood on the snow?
If you go skiing at Trail Creek today, you might think you see blood on the snow. Fortunately, no, there was no murder today, and no moose were run down, we just had a slight technical malfunction, leading to a bit of hydraulic fluid leakage. No real harm was done, and hopefully the issue has been resolved, though it did delay grooming and lead to a bit of a truncated trails list for today.

Today’s grooming was a single pass of most trails, with double passes on the east fields and fields. Yesterday the snow was quite sticky out in the sun, so you may want to bring anti-seize just in case. Overall the trails are looking pretty good.

Groomer’s choice is the East Fields Woods.

Shooting Star

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 3/20
The track groomed out very nice yesterday evening as warmer afternoon temperatures allowed our equipment to cut through the stubborn ice layer that formed from last week’s rain and subzero temperatures. For the remainder of the season, grooming will occur in either evenings or mornings depending on temperatures and storms. Anticipate grooming to occur in the morning time for most of this week, as the forecast is calling for daily snow and rain showers. Please note, in certain situations, such as a very wet rain/snow event, we may decide not to groom to preserve the integrity of trails as the snow base can become unstable causing severe ruts. Springtime brings constant evolving conditions throughout the whole day as massive temperatures swings promotes intense freeze/thaw cycles, creating icier morning skiing and softer, even slushy snow in the afternoon. The track this time of year can also settle out inconsistently while the snow melts during the day creating sunken spots, especially around catch/drainage basins. Skiers may also encounter icy and crumbly snow sections as the track is not as pliable once it makes the spring profile shift. We will continue to do our best working with the everchanging, sometimes extremely challenging spring conditions and update everyone over any noteworthy details as they arise. Enjoy the springtime skiing and soak up those sunny days whenever they pop up!

Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged. All you need to do is visit: GTNPF.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Nordic” in the designation section. There is the opportunity to leave a one time gift or reoccurring monthly donations in any amount.
