Profiles in Nordic: Ali Cohane
Ali is the owner of Persephone & Picnic and is a Gold Sponsor of the Nordic Alliance. In her own words she shares her insights and experience with Nordic sports.
“Head to the mountains and pack a lunch, maybe from Persephone. There is no better way to fall in love with the sport. You get a little exercise, usually an unbeatable view, and a beautiful quiet moment in the snow where you can sit and appreciate this incredible place we live.” -Ali Cohane

If you’re like many, many Jackson Hole/ Teton Valley locals, your car or truck is your moving ski room! Classic skis, skate skis, BC Nordic skis, and likely some Alpine Touring (AT) skis, maybe alpine resort skis ( powder, all mountain, groomer/ carve skis), plus poles, boots for each type of ski, plus accessories x members of yr family or ski buddies!
Send us your pictures of your mobile ski stash or share on IG @jhnordic #jhnordic!!
Teton Tea
Isn’t it a pleasure to visit those special places every year and to treasure annual traditions – maybe skiing up Shadow Mountain, or from Signal Mountain to Bradley-Taggart, or snowshoeing up Granite Canyon – all glorious and full of friendship and fun.
Adding to the fun, is the chance to pair it with a bit of local history – often resulting in an even greater appreciation of the sites enjoyed. For instance, Whitegrass Ranch, established in 1913, is Jackson Hole’s third oldest dude ranch, with cabins restored by the National Park Service. Likewise, the restored Lucas Fabian Cabins provide a perfect resting spot north of Taggart Lake. And the Hunter-Hereford Ranch provides awe-inspiring photos with the Tetons in their background. And then there is opportunity to visit the Jackson Hole History Museum and the Grand Teton National Park Visitor Center for even more excellent storytelling.
And speaking of history, according to Inger Koedt’s recipe book entitled Recipes for the Mountains, Jackson Hole’s Hootenanny was started in the 1950s as a gathering of climbers and folk singers called the “Teton Tea Party” at which Teton Tea was soon a tradition: “½ portion strong tea, ¼ portion white wine, ¼ portion red wine, with lemon and sugar to taste. Heat it all, best over an open fire so it gets that smoky taste.”
Here’s nodding to your favorite traditions!

You’ve Got to Love This!
A perfect blue sky, pristine white snow, and majestic mountain peaks are dominating the scene here today at Trail Creek making for yet another great day for a Nordic ski! Sure, the temp is maybe a bit chilly in the mid-teens, but with no wind and endless sunshine, it is nothing but very nice.
If you are lucky enough to make it out today, you will probably find plenty of trails all to yourself as the youth teams are either done for the week, or off to Soldier Hollow, Utah to race. If you would like to follow results of the racing at the Olympic venue in Utah, Summit Timing is posting times as they happen.
Speaking of racing, don’t forget that those of us not racing in Utah are welcome to head over the hill for the Spud Chase on Saturday which is a great annual event sponsored by TVTAP.
Today’s Husky grooming on the stable snow conditions we have been experiencing was mainly a single pass through all the trails, dropping fresh classic tracks where needed. The snow is firm if perhaps just a bit slow in the cooler conditions, but skiers can pretty much go anywhere with any technique and find lots of good skiing.
Finally a pretty cool animal sighting today; five grouse were busily foraging in the Animal Farm area today. Their camouflage makes them difficult to see, but four of the five did line up pretty well for the image below.
Groomer’s choice for today is East Fields.

The temperatures may be cold, but the views are hot! Expect mostly sunny skies this weekend with below average temps. The cold temperatures make the snow more abrasive and not as pliable for grooming, which can leave a crumble like texture in areas. Overall, the trails are in great shape and should be very enjoyable through Monday. Be sure to monitor the temps for choosing the right ski wax, as it will be a slower ski if you’re not matched up correctly. Enjoy the sunshine! Next update will be Monday 1/23.
Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged. All you need to do is visit: GTNPF.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Nordic” in the designation section. There is the opportunity to leave a one time gift or reoccurring monthly donations in any amount.
