Special Olympics Wyoming Winter Games in Jackson

Special Olympics Wyoming State Winter Games will be back in Jackson this year March 14-16!  We’re celebrating the 45th year of State Winter Games in 2023; these games began in Jackson in 1978.  Due to Covid restrictions and challenges, our athletes have not been able to come to Jackson in person since the 2020 State Winter Games; they are truly looking forward to their first year back!

Did you know that Special Olympics Wyoming:
Offers programming in every county in Wyoming, serves more than 1,600 Wyoming athletes across 16 sports, never asks athletes or their families to pay to participate, annually hosts 5 statewide competitions and many additional area competitions, sent a delegation of 45 athletes, coaches, Unified Partners, and staff to the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games in Orlando, including athlete Izzy Shanor from Jackson, and continues to grow and expand programming year after year.

We are still in need of volunteers for the competitions on Wednesday and Thursday.  If anyone is interested in assisting, please reach out to the office at (307) 235-3062 or sports@specialolympicswy.org.

Moose-Wilson Road summer construction schedule

With our deep snowpack, a favorite local classic cross country and snowshoe trail starting from the Granite Canyon trailhead running over the snow-covered  Moose-Wilson road north to LSR, is often a good choice into early April. However, GTNP announced today that the road will be closed to all users starting from April 10th.

A nice side alternative would be skiing/snowshoeing across the Meadow to the east of the road, as long as snow allows. Parking may be limited, so check with the GTNP South entrance. We will report back in early April as information becomes available on details.

The road from the LSRP south to Granite Canyon Entrance will open to through traffic, seven days a week, beginning June 30 at 7 p.m., with possible 20-minute delays. The Moose-Wilson Road project will be completed in phases and will provide for better driving, parking, hiking and accessibility for visitors, preserving the rustic character and opportunities for wildlife viewing.

Expect a full road closure from LSRP to Granite Canyon Entrance Station from April 10—May 26.

The road will open to weekend traffic only at 7 p.m. May 26—June 30.

Teton Co/Jackson Parks & Rec Winter Grooming Survey

Your input as a winter trails user is valued and needed: this is your chance to determine grooming days, more groomed trails and pathways & connectivity for Winter 23-24! Please complete this Community Input survey, to help Teton County/Jackson Parks & Recreation determine next Winter Grooming service levels: such as increasing to 7 days per week of favorite trails such as Cache Creek, Game Creek, Emily’s Pond, Stilson-Wilson Centennial, May Park. Community input is also valued to determine if some or all the trails and pathways currently not groomed, could be upgraded from plowed surfaces to pack & rolled/snow covered trails, allowing nordic skiing, easier fat bike biking, trail running , walking on snow. Please complete this survey ASAP for input to allow for budgets to be prepared/proposed by end of March!

Winter Service Levels and Important Dates

Do you enjoy any of the trails that Teton County or the town of Jackson maintains during the winter season? If so, you’ll be happy to know that grooming will continue through March based on the snowpack and forecast. Conditions will be evaluated the week of April 3rd to determine if grooming can continue past that date. Please continue to check the Parks and Recreation website for up-to-date information including grooming and ice rink status:   http://www.tetonparksandrec.org/1338/Parks-Pathways

As a trail user and citizen of this fine area you are invited to the Parks and Recreation Public Open House at Teton County Library on Thursday, March 9th (5-7pm) and Friday, March 10th (1-3PM) to solicit public input on Winter Service Levels, as well as Karns Meadow Zoning and Melody Ranch Trailhead Bicycle Pump Track. For more information visit: https://engagetetoncountywy.com/tetonopenhouse

As a winter trail user, please take the time to have your voice heard through the winter service levels survey for 2022/2023. Teton County Parks and Recreation strives to meet the needs of the community throughout the winter grooming season, take the survey to let them know how they are doing and where they might improve: take the survey

Off-Trail Exploration
If you’ve ever wondered what it looks like when the Husky goes off the groomed trails, now you have an idea. With this being a very nice snow winter, exploring beyond the groomed areas can be a challenging and exciting experience! This particular event was to facilitate cabin access to one of our residents, but was an enjoyable experience overall for the groomer, even if it did get the heart rate up a time or two during the process.

Today’s grooming was mostly a single pass across the trail system, packing in a fairly significant amount of new snowfall from last night, as well as still dealing with the remaining heavy snow from over the weekend. As a result, some of the trail crossings remain a bit rough, and will hopefully be cleaned up tomorrow, after the current grooming has had a chance to set, and the snow stops splashing out quite so much. Nonetheless, skiing should be very pleasant. Also groomed were the Stadium, Lower Stadium, and Skyview. Light snowfall and wind might cause a little drifting, but nothing to be too concerned about.

Grooming this week will be fairly standard, other than the upcoming Skinny Skis Wydaho Season Finale! The race course is being kept top secret, save for a few privileged people in the know, which may or may not include the groomer. The groomer cannot, of course, reveal this privileged information, but it is possible the groomer is susceptible to bribes. Food for thought.

Groomer’s choice for today is Woolsey Woods.

Shooting Star

Last Update: 3/6
Weather pending GCM will be doing our annual application of black sand on the greens to naturally promote uniform snow melt. On Monday we’ll be grooming the greens throughout the day, which then needs to set up overnight to create a surface for us to walk on for applying the sand with rotary spreaders. The sand is to be applied Tues-Thursday (Subject to weather). Do not walk on the greens at any time. Throughout this week you will see machinery working during the day (snowcat, snowmobiles) and there could be some temporary rough sections, especially in areas where we are entering & exiting the greens. Grooming will also temporarily switch to evening grooming beginning at 5:30pm starting Monday and remain this way until this time sensitive operation is complete. Grooming in the evening is needed so we can apply the sand first thing in the mornings. Thanks for everyone assistance and skiing should remain enjoyable during this process.

Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged.
