Kick, glide and pedal Sunday with JH Nordic

An article about the free winter trails event by JH News & Guide
A celebration of non-motorized winter trail use and community, Jackson Hole Nordic Alliance returns to Turpin Meadow Ranch for a full day of demos, good eats and winter athletes this Sunday.

Last year’s Free Ski, Fat Bike and Snowshow Day event saw 600 participants. JH Nordic Alliance’s board chair and founder Nancy Leon expects this year’s turnout to meet that and more, especially with the number of new partners invited to participate.

Abby Warner joins the Jackson Hole Nordic Alliance as executive director

The Jackson Hole Nordic Alliance (JHNA) is pleased to appoint Abby Warner as its new executive director. Abby will work with the JHNA Board of Directors and its team to lead its mission to provide information, broaden awareness, and expand access to Jackson Hole/Teton Valley’s extensive winter trails for Nordic skiing, fat biking, snowshoeing, and other human-powered winter trail recreation.

Prior to joining the Jackson Hole Nordic Alliance, Abby held key leadership positions with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) in the Yukon Territory and Teton Valley, Idaho. Abby has volunteered her time locally as a board member with Teton ValleyTrails and Pathways, Teton Valley Community School / Mountain Academy of Teton Science Schools and the Grand Targhee Ski and Snowboard Foundation. An active Nordic, backcountry and alpine skier, mountain biker, and hiker, she has served as a team parent and race volunteer for Nordic and mountain biking teams.

January Nature News:
Ringing in 2024 with the Beauty Jackson Hole

Provided by The Hole Hiking Experience
January is the coldest month in Jackson Hole and 2024 begins with a temperature inversion. With high pressure, or sunny days, warm air rises trapping cold air on the valley floor. The temperature difference can be drastic. Afternoons generally get a bit warmer at lower elevations with the sun’s radiation. Currently, snow remains thin and we end the year at 66% of normal mountain snowfall but it looks like snow is on the way!

I found a dead deer this past week near my townhouse in Jackson. Lots of deer winter near town but none have died near my home in the nearly 40 years that I have lived here. I called Wyoming Game and Fish to report it, make sure it wasn’t killed by something large, and inform our local department so the population can be monitored. I was told the animal may have died due to recent cold temperatures, fed corn (which deer can’t digest), or another unknown cause. It was disemboweled, probably by a coyote. The warden helped remove it and said it seems like an isolated incident.

Reason #3 to Attend the Winter Trails Event of the Season

To ensure everyone stays warm while enjoying the winter trails on a cold January day, we will be serving delicious hot chocolate and Kate’s Real Food will have samples of their sustaining bars. Turpin Meadow Ranch will have an outdoor concessions area serving up bison chili, brats, chili dogs, and other hot beverages. Additionally, the Restaurant Bar at Turpin Meadow Ranch will be open on the day of the event, providing a cozy dining space for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For participants who prefer a quick bite while out on the trail, feel free to bring a packed lunch.

A Change Is On The Horizon!
After several weeks of almost nothing in the snow department, it finally looks like the New Year is ushering in some new trends in snowfall.  While we still have a couple days of sunshine, looking through next weekend, forecast models are calling for about 7 inches of snow with the longer term outlooks calling for above normal precip beyond next weekend.  We have a very nice Prinoth Husky that can’t wait to do its thing; hopefully it will be turned loose soon!

Some of our IMD racers will be turning their skis loose in competition at the Nordic Senior Nationals in Soldier Hollow this week.  Official racing begins today, the schedule is available on the event website and timing is being provided by Summit Timing.

Things are going to get really busy Wednesday this week when all the JHSC programs hit the snow at Trail Creek.  Kindergarteners on up will be enjoying sliding over our wonderful snow.  Looking ahead to next weekend, don’t forget to mark your calendars for the Jackson Hole Nordic Free Ski Day at Turpin Meadows.  Information is available at the JH Nordic website.

Today’s grooming at Trail Creek was at least a best line Ginzu pass on most every trail recently groomed with multiple passes around the Close Field.  In addition several play areas were groomed out in anticipation of multitudes of youthful skiers on Wednesday.  While conditions are still thin, the hard working snow still is providing some pretty good early season skiing.

Groomer’s choice for today is the Close Field.

Teton Co./Jackson Parks & Rec

Last Update: 12/11
Staff went up Game Creek on Saturday. Weekend storm was a bust. Snowmobile and pull behind took a real beating so we pulled out before getting into the sunny areas. We need 3-4” of wet snow or more fluffy snow to keep grooming.

Cache Creek Singletrack

Groomed by Friends of Pathways
Grooming As Needed

Last Update: 12/10
We groomed the Cache Creek road to Noker Mine and upper Hagen from bridge 5 to 2.  The lower trails are still a little thin on snow, especially under the trees, but are still compact enough to use for now.  We will keep snowshoeing around and packing things in until there is enough snow to take the roller through.

Please help support trail grooming for the Cache Creek Single track trails by donating to the Friends of Pathways.  Visit: friendsofpathways.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Grooming” in the campaign section.

Early season and thin conditions will continue as dry & sunny weather is forecasted for yet another week . Friendly reminder to ski only on the trails and do not venture off paths to prevent injury and damage on the golf course. Next update will be Friday (1/5). Happy New Years and enjoy the sunshine!

  • Trail conditions are early season. Please ski with caution as the snow profile is extremely thin.
  • Walking is not allowed.
  • No classic tracks will be set, and sporadic bare/brushy/exposed areas may be present.
  • Grooming frequencies will be as needed to preserve the track.
  • Sled Hill is Closed. Needs ample snow (2FT).
  • Temporary closures of the Nordic Course may be needed until additional snow accumulates if severe melt occurs.
  • Small game/scavenger animals may be present throughout the whole course. Use extra caution when skiing with dogs.

Turpin Meadow Ranch

Last Update: 1/2
All trails received at least a best pass with the ginzu the evening of New Years Day. The summer homes and riverside trails (5.5k) continue to be the best we have to offer, especially for skating. If you’re going to venture into the hills we recommend your classic gear, and remember to ski with your eyes up and watch out for hazards. Bikers, please stay off of the ski trails in the hills, there is single track available in the lower pasture and on the riverside. The hills trails are just a little too soft for fat bikes right now and if grooves are formed there is no repairing them until more snow comes.

TMR is open to all for skiing, lunch, Nordic lessons, and tours! Call the office (307) 543-2000 or visit our website to book your adventure and/or meal! Check out our live webcam for current conditions.

Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged. All you need to do is visit: GTNPF.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Nordic” in the designation section. There is the opportunity to leave a one time gift or reoccurring monthly donations in any amount.

Grooming Has Yet to Begin in Grand Teton National Park.

GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK — Grand Teton National Park (GTNP) shared a road status update to its Facebook page on Thursday, Dec. 21, sharing that grooming operations on Teton Park Road will be delayed until more snow falls.

Southern Valley Nordic

Grooming Schedule: Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday

Variable spring like conditions exist on all trails in the Southern Valley / Mike Harris system. Expect very slippery / icy conditions in the Parking area, in open areas and on descents throughtout Yeti’s, campground and all singletrack trails.

We are grooming to refresh the nordic trails on Yeti and campground loop sunday, tuesday and friday’s.

The singletrack trials need more new snow before we can do much more to them to make them less sketchy. Please be patiaient and consider other options for fat bike riding. Some recommendations from local riders are valley roads in the afternoons, Horseshoe-packsaddle road, Aspen trial and Jackpine-Pinonchle rd.

Please note the USFS dog closure policy Dec 1st – April 15th at this venue.

  • Get Outside: Early Season Skiing and More in Jackson Hole
While many of us dream of clipping into our skis for early-season skiing in Jackson Hole, this November, you can still see the roots and rocks beneath your feet. A forecast predicts another 3 inches of snow this weekend in Jackson, with a few more inches expected into Thanksgiving week, and we’re all ready for it.
