As the New Year brings renewal, we wish you all happiness and good tidings. May your heart be filled with joy and kindness for all beings on this wonderful Earth.

Happy New Year from all of us at The Hole Hiking Experience.

What a week of change. The arctic cold snap descended on the valley last week, followed by rain and temperatures in the forties and now, more storms on the way.  December will make the record books for overall snowfall and the month ends with deep snow in Jackson Hole.

In the winter world, there is a direct relationship between the weight of your body, size of your foot and how you easily you move through the snow. The heavier and bigger you are the more you sink. Imagine the effort needed for a bison, moose or elk to move through the snow compared to a snowshoe hare.

Animals sink to varying depths based on their weight and conditions. They make daily decisions based on the energy required and the reward received. Recent weather has melted the snow making movement tough. Fun to explore, observe and contemplate movement through the snow world.

Nice time to explore a packed trail such as the groomed track towards Jenny Lake, the road into Cache Creek, or the many bike paths throughout the valley. Cooler temperatures on the way and conditions will change yet again. Big first week of winter. Have fun, be safe and if a guided tour interests you, give us a call. www.holehike.com 307.690.4453

Teton County/Jackson Parks & Rec
Winter Service Levels Update 12/28/22

Due to the warm temperatures and recent rain staff is unable to prepare the ice rinks for
safe use. All rinks will be closed today, and lights will be turned off tonight. The ice is
soft and there is standing water in areas. Additionally, grooming efforts this morning up
Cache Creek were less than ideal. In order to ensure the integrity of the bases and avoid
potential damage May Park and Game Creek will not be groomed today. Please continue
to check the Parks & Rec website and/or Twitter feeds for updates. You can also get up

Trip report: Trail Pines Nordic

What an amazing surprise to come across 2 otters eating fishing and rolling on the ice of a pond next to the groomed track at Teton Pines Nordic today. The Pines grooming was excellent for classic and skate, in spite of the melt-freeze snow of the day before. Good grooming makes such a big difference!!

Last Update: 12/28

Great Race Day!
According to the race results page, 106 skiers showed up at Trail Creek for a great day of classic racing on Monday in the 2022 Betty Woolsey Classic Race.  Thanks to the racers for making the effort, the fans who cheered them on, and the helpers that did all the grunt work to put on a great Nordic race!

After yesterday’s rain and snow, the weather has straightened itself out today with cooler temps and steady light snowfall.  In fact looking ahead at the forecast, it looks like these Nordic friendly conditions will continue through the rest of the week and year.

Today’s grooming is pretty much the 10 K Pisten Bully loop of the Betty Woolsey course with a few small changes to make things ski a little better for recreational skiers.  In addition to the Pisten Bully, the roller was also utilized on the same loop to widen the Pisten Bully’s footprint.

Cle’s Climb and Faceplant are back and Homesite is being groomed in a continuous sweep.  In addition to this loop, the roller was working hard grooming the remaining field trails.  The new Gill Huff loop was not groomed today as the warm temps might have resulted in the Pisten Bully crashing through the snow bridge into the creek, not a good thing!  If you make it out for a ski today, while there might be a bit of fresh snow on your trail,  all in all the skiing should be great!

A note on grooming equipment; we have been authorized to continue utilizing Valley Landscape Service’s Pisten Bully until we receive a loaner cat.  We anticipate receiving a loaner cat in the very near future.  As to our Husky, Prinoth was able to expedite things and a new engine was shipped from Italy to Quebec where it will/has go/gone through customs.  From there it will fly to Salt Lake City where the Prinoth service manager will personally deliver it to the Mercedes diesel engine shop in Rock Springs.  We are looking at having it back in service in less than two weeks.

Groomer’s choice for today is to follow the tracks on the 10 K loop through the woods.

Grooming Today: Emily’s Pond Levee, High School Fields, Wilson Centennial Trail
Last Update: 12/28

Game creek will not be groomed today because of poor grooming conditions. My tracks are digging deep into the unfrozen saturated bases causing uneven surfaces and leaving track marks. I would caused more damage than good if I continued grooming today.

Cache creek and May park are groomed but in poor condition. The bases got completely saturated from yesterdays rain and did not complete freeze last night. My tracks where digging deep into the base and the tiller could not cover up the track marks and left an uneven surface.

Poor grooming conditions. machine tracks were digging deep into the base and the tiller could not cover them up without causing other issues because of all the rain and warm temperatures yesterday. Skiing will be somewhat poor with uneven conditions. The next few days are forecasted to be colder so the bases should firm up allowing me to groom on Friday.

Last Update: 12/28
An atmospheric river stretching from Indonesia to the West Coast of the United States (pictured below) has delivered warm temperatures, low elevation rain, and heavy spring-like snow to the Jackson Hole valley and mountains. All trails groomed out well this morning with a few awkward/softer spots around turns or where major drifting occurred. Track conditions throughout today will be dependent upon the amount of wind and additional snow we receive. Some additional drifting should be expected and could create challenging conditions for skiers venturing out today. This “Pineapple Express” storm system should continue to bring unsettled weather into the weekend and the New Year.
