Trip Reports: A Fun Weekend on Nordic Skis
This weekend many people got on their Nordic skis and traveled over hills and through the woods enjoying mild temperatures and good company. While the trails explored were varied there was one thing in common with them all: it was great to be outside on winter trails!
NL and crew explored Game Creek: “Parks & Rec groomed Game Creek with Bushong Property Services snow cat, with excellent corduroy and a classic track. Very nice ski, well behaved dogs, skate and classic, and even 1 fat bike.”
CS checked out the Cache Creek trail: “It has not been groomed in a while and road is a bit rough but skiable. Not good for track skis. Hagan was kind of bumpy, but plenty of snow and nice to be up there.” Since this report was sent in there has been some attention paid to Cache Creek: “I rolled the cache creek road 4 wide, uts not corduroy but it should be wide enough to skate ski. I also smoothed out some of the singletrack with the harrow drag.” -Chris O.
KD & JS Headed out to Phelps Lake from Granite Canyon Trailhead: “Snow was perfect both out and back but a little thin on the lake so beware! Great new parking area!”
The Spud Chase
Hooray for TVTAP’s new rabbit, and their dedicated groomers! The Spud Chase course was transformed overnight from quite soft to a firm fun race course.
Thanks to all of the volunteers (like Melanie who stood in the breeze, cozy as can be in her onesie, directing lap traffic), the racers, the cheerers, the groomers, the race sponsors and Kevin and Deb for putting together a fun community race.
About 80 racers competed, from a 1/2k loop for the youngest racers to two laps of the 11k course for the young at heart! And yes! There were cookies at the finish line for all and a baked potato bar to fuel the racers.
Night Ski at Turpin Meadow Ranch
Looking for a way to shake up your routine? Come howl at the wolf moon! This Thursday, January 25 Turpin Meadow Ranch is hosting their first night ski of the season from 5PM-8PM. Ski or fat bike under the January “wolf” moon, but bring your headlamp just in case of cloud cover. There will be glow sticks for all participants to help light your way. Afterwards warm up in the lodge with drink specials and fondue. Call ahead for reservations (307) 543-2000.
Volunteers Needed for Moose Day 2024
The annual Moose Day survey is scheduled for Saturday, March 2nd and the Jackson Hole Wildlife Foundation is recruiting volunteers to survey search areas for which they don’t yet have coverage. To register for Moose Day (and find an area that still needs to be surveyed) click the button below. View the map in the registration form to find a search area highlighted in yellow that still needs to be covered.
Nordic skiing is a fun and practical way to cover ground on Moose Day, especially in spots where moose are hard to see from the road!
JHWF welcomes first time volunteers! If you’re not certified Nature Mapper but would still like to participate, please register to attend the Nature Mapping Certification Course on February 7th.

The Future?!
The BBC posted a fascinating article entitled Concrete tunnels and permafrost: How Sweden is future-proofing skiing on January 19th. If you are the least bit Nordic inclined, which you probably are if you are reading this grooming report, it is a fascinating read about Nordic skiing in Sweden and how they are preparing for all future scenarios. The tunnel itself is part of Torsby Skidtunnel & Sportcenter and is 1.3 kilometers long. Perhaps one of you has 20 or 30 million that you don’t know what to do with…this would be really cool at Trail Creek!
Until that day, we’ll just have to make do with what nature provides and today that is more than plenty. Temps are quite balmy for January with a report time temperature of 33.1ºF, calm winds, and light snow. Today’s early morning Husky grooming covered most every trail with multiple passes in the Close Field. On most trails, the Husky pass was a combination skate/classic pass.
The snow has firmed nicely; skaters will find fast conditions and classic skiers able to ace the wax will likewise be able to move very efficiently.
Groomer’s choice for today is the East Fields.

Trails remain in good shape after recent winds and snowy weather. Temperatures will be 5-10 degrees above average for the foreseeable future, which will cause some settling on the track to occur throughout the day. Because this settling effect, there may be a few awkward/choppy sections as the snow profile changes/evolves from packed-powder to hard-packed. Outlook is calling for daily light snow showers or rain/snow mix to occur through Monday. Next update will be Tuesday 1/23. Enjoy!
- Trail conditions are early season as thin areas persist.
- Walking is not allowed.
- Sled Hill is Open.
- Classic Tracks are set where snow allows.

There is a classic track set throughout all of Rick’s Basin-Quakie-Snowdrift. The connector from the base out to Rick’s is all flat grooming (no classic track until you are at the top of Rick’s).
GTR is no longer grooming for fat biking or snowshoeing, however fat biking is permitted on the groomed Nordic trails.

Groomed skate track on campground and yeti loops. Set some classic track, but not the entire two loops. Warm temps during grooming resulted in mixed results. Hopefully temps will drop and the track will set up by morning.
Please note the USFS dog closure policy Dec 1st – April 15th at this venue.

Reestablished the walking path and took two laps with the roller for a skate set. Temperatures were getting too warm, causing the roller to clump. Not the greatest skate conditions since the track is a little wavy. Will try to smooth it out over the next few days.

Bonus groom! The track was soft and chopped up this morning so I did a few laps with the groomer to pack it down and smooth it out. Spring like weather is expected all week so please use the track early in the day or late in the evening. Expect the track to be soft and uneven until winter returns.
Please pick up your trash and dog pop with the supplied Mutt Mitt station.
