Teton Canyon Meet and Greet

Report by: Abby Warner
Caitie Quinn (TVTAP trail ambassador/yurt meister/groomer) and Greg Buchko (TVTAP board member) greet trail users at the Teton Canyon trailhead. Even though it was hovering at 1 degree, the parking lot was almost full. Hearty souls!

Spotted: Snowshoers, walkers, folks on light-touring skis, snowmachiner towing a  skier on backcountry gear, classic and skate skiers, and a puppy in training to become a role model of four-legged etiquette on this popular shared trail–big shout-out to puppy’s owners for their thoughtful diligence and firm kindness in helping him learn the ropes.

Upcoming Meet and Greets with TVTAP include a family fun poker run under the lights at Sherman Park in Victor, 6 – 9 pm on January 24.

Trip Report: Grand Teton Park Road

Sunday in the Park! A glorious way to spend MLK long weekend. The Teton Park Road was beautifully groomed with 2 classic tracks and a skate lane, plus a snowshoe/ walking lane from the  Cottonwood trailhead ( just north of Taggart Parking lot). The groomed trail narrows at the Highlands ( Climbers Ranch access road) to a double classic track plus skate ski lane that is shared with non- skiers. This is new this winter, designed to allow the GTNP road crew easier plowing in late March at the end of the Nordic ski season.

In spite of chilly temps (4f.) and a cold breeze from the north, our group of friends quickly warmed up, and had a perfect ski outing. We dressed in layers, brought water, a snack, handwarmers, so ready for anything.

We were greeted by several friendly volunteer GTNP Nordic Ambassadors, who donate time , experience, knowledge to enhance one’s Nordic ski experience – thank you volunteers!

While our group all chose classic crosscountry skis due to the cold temps, we did see a few skate skiers. Local nordic ski experts had advised that skate skiing gets slow and harder to glide at temps below 10F.

We so enjoyed our 8 mile ski. One of the most striking xc ski trails anywhere! Highly recommended whatever distance you go. -NL

More Snow = Better Skiing

This last storm cycle had the Nordic ski trail groomers of Jackson Hole and Teton Valley working overtime to transform dehydrated tracks into prime condition (thank you all!). Now that the snow has been shoveled, compressed, and made into beautiful corduroy skate lanes and classic tracks it’s time to get out there and ski! Where will you go? Check out our trails page for inspiration, with over 100 trails mapped and described there is something for everyone to enjoy.

We encourage you to try visiting somewhere new, maybe you’ll discover your next favorite place. And don’t forget, as a member of the JH Nordic community we value your perspective, please share a trail report (a short blurb and a photo) by emailing us at trailconditions@jhnordic.com.

Trail Creek

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 1/15
A Big Thanks!
A huge thank you goes out to all the racers, volunteers, and spectators that helped make the Johnny Curtis Memorial, IMD Nordic, High Plains Nordic, and Wyoming High School Race happen and successful.  Over 400 racers gathered over the three day event, taking advantage of the Nordic opportunities that Trail Creek and JHSC have to offer.  Thanks!

Today at Trail Creek it is yet another day to check out some great Nordic opportunities.  The image above was taken moments before the Husky made its maiden voyage of the year down Faceplant.  On that same journey the Husky hit pretty much every trail in the system except for some of the East Fields.  New grooming today includes Mug’s Meadow and nearly universal classic tracks.

Weekly Schedule 1-15 (800x225).jpg

While according to the calendar the hard working prep/comp team has the day off, it looks to be a busy week once again at Trail Creek.  Of note this week, it is the last master’s class at the Teton Pines, (training switches to Trail Creek next week), there is a high school race in Pinedale Friday and Saturday, and the Spud Chase Freestyle Race is over the hill on Saturday.

Groomer’s choice for today is to check out Homesite.

Turpin Meadow Ranch

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 1/15
There was quite a bit of wind and drifting snow while I was out grooming this morning, but I used it to our advantage and was able to smooth out a lot of bumps and cover most of the dirt. The mule loop is still thin in spots but everything else has shaped up nicely. The ski trails may be a bit soft so please limit bikes to the single track today. Single track was also groomed this morning.

TMR is open to the public daily for skiing, meals, Nordic lessons, and tours! Call the office (307) 543-2000 or visit our website to book your adventure! Check out our live webcam for current conditions.

Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged. All you need to do is visit: GTNPF.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Nordic” in the designation section. There is the opportunity to leave a one time gift or reoccurring monthly donations in any amount.

Driggs School Loops

Grooming Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Last Updated: 1/15
Driggs is looking really good! The snow gods smiled on us over the last week, and we got enough snow to bury most of the weeds and rocks. Pete, Peter and Paul did lap after lap to work the snow on the track. Other than a few tufts of grass, and some ruts from the groomer, it is near perfect. Go enjoy some glide before the next storm!

Please pick up your trash and dog pop with the supplied Mutt Mitt station.
