Know before you go: Winter hiking tips from the National Park Service

By Buckrail
MOOSE, Wyo. — With winter in full swing, the National Park Service (NPS) is reminding park users of some general safety tips before they head out on a hiking endeavor this season.

“Hiking in winter can be a beautiful thing, there’s nothing like the hush that falls while snow blankets a forest,” said NPS. “But remember when you head outdoors you leave behind the established comforts of home: food and water; shelter from the sun, wind and weather; and easy access to emergency services.”

Keep the following tips in mind before heading out in winter weather conditions:

  • Snowshoes and traction devices are recommended on ice and snow.
  • In winter, some trails are not marked or maintained. Route-finding skills are important, don’t rely on others’ tracks which can lead you astray.
  • Know your route. Snow-covered landscapes look very different than in summer. Snow can be deep once you are off-trail.
  • Keep off the ice. Streams and lakes can have thin ice and be very dangerous.
  • Be avalanche aware. Check with your park for the latest safety information and avalanche forecast.
  • Always be willing to turn around. Weather and trails conditions can change quickly as snow falls and melts.
  • Watch for wildlife. Always keep your distance and practice safe wildlife viewing practices.

Miles of Quiet Trails!
With a soft gray ski, no wind, very pleasant temperatures, and few skiers so far, it looks to be a great day to ski at Trail Creek.  This afternoon will be pretty quiet as well since many of the high school skiers are off to Lander for a Wyoming High School Nordic competition.  Lander has an informative website online for the event with a promise of results being posted soon after racing finishes up today and tomorrow; check it out at the Lander Nordic Race link.

Today at Trail Creek the Husky was once again hard at it, buffing out pretty much every trail.  The really warm temps forecast earlier in the week ended up being not quite so warm and cloudier.  The result being that the potentially icy conditions were avoided with conditions remaining quite pristine today.  Most classic tracks were in good shape so were only reset on the narrower trails, allowing the Husky to focus on skate lanes.  Double passes did occur in some of the field trails, Moose Loop, and Black Hole.  Time was taken today to trim some of the branches which have gotten closer to the trails due to the ever deepening snow.

The critter count was good today with a typical moose sighting as well as a flock of grouse on Suicide.  By the way, now one has claimed the missing boot from yesterday, it is pictured above if it is yours.

Finally you may have read this elsewhere, but a recent article highlights how well Lena Poduska has been doing so far this year as well as highlights from the recent national championships in Michigan.  Click on this link to read the entire article if you haven’t seen it already.

Groomer’s choice for today is Black Hole.

Shooting Star

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 1/13
It’s Friday the 13th and Nordic conditions are scary good! Expect warmer temperatures and light snow showers through Monday. Please note that the snowcat/pistenbully’s joystick for controlling the front plow blade malfunction today and we should have a new joystick here sometime next week. With the current forecast, skiers likely won’t notice any difference with conditions while we wait on the part. Where the blade is vital, is during drifty/heavy snow events or when icy conditions develop, and we’ll send additional updates if this occurs. Daily grooming will continue as normal, just we won’t be able to aggressively use our front blade for several days. Overall, skiing should be very enjoyable.
