Trip Reports: Cattleman’s Bridge, Signal Mtn to Bradley Taggart, Island Hopping on Jackson Lake

Beautiful ski to Cattlemen Bridge on Sunday. The only tracks I crossed were animal ones.

The Park will stop grooming the road from Signal Mountain to Bradley Taggert next Friday and the forecast was for sunshine all day – so we packed our sunscreen – and headed out for our 14.5 mile classic and skate ski day.  It turned out to be ideal conditions and was one of the most spectacular days we have spent in the Tetons.  Three skate skied and three classic skied.  Three had never done this adventure.  All had a memorable day.  As one said “I wish this day would never end!” -KD

A few days ago a friendly bunch of Sierra Club Jackson Hole alumni cross country skiers gathered on one of their favorite outings: Jackson Lake Island Hopping. Taking advantage of cold nights, sunny blue sky days, views of the entire Teton Range rising up on the west side of the lake, this is the perfect time to ski around the islands near Colter Bay, picnic, enjoy the wide open spaces. Thanks to local Sierra Club xc ski leaders who originally shared this favorite outing with Jackson Hole Nordic years ago!

On Sunday a group of friends and JHNordic enthusiasts followed the JHNordic.com trail description and GPS map, and tracked their location as they skied out onto the frozen, snow-covered lake. They passed a low level igloo, built no doubt by ice anglers (2 holes in the ice now frozen closed). The crew was rewarded with expansive views of the Tetons that take your breath away. They had the whole lake to themselves until the end of the return trip, when 2 snowshoers were spotted in the distance. FYI: This is the perfect week (on a clear day) to experience this special place!

Skinny Skis Season Finale Photo Recap

Saturday proved to be a sunny community race morning at Trail Creek Nordic. From the .5k Lollipoppers to the 10k racers, it was a fun day on perfectly groomed Nordic trails. Families and friends from Jackson Hole and Teton Valley gathered to celebrate the camaraderie of sliding around on winter trails!

Shout Out to Frida the Dog and Her Responsible People

Shout out to Frida and her people for exemplifying responsible winter trail use by having a great leash system (see the hot pink in the photo), and taking the time to read the signs about where to travel on the groomed track since this was their first opportunity to walk in Grand Teton National Park! What a day they got! Thanks also to the GTNP Foundation/the Bushong Property Service for grooming a wide enough track for walkers, dogs, side by side classic skiers and skaters.

There are some incredible prizes up for grabs… Just added: tickets to soak in the hot springs at Astoria Park Conservancy. Get to entering, odds are good you’ll end up with something great.

We encourage winter trail users to support all of our grooming teams across Jackson Hole and Teton Valley. When possible please consider a donation to the trails you frequent. Please leave a comment such as “grooming” or “Nordic” in the designation or campaign section.

Trail Creek

Last Update: 3/10

Fun, Fast, and Thanks!
Thanks to all that gathered at Trail Creek Saturday for the Skinny Skis Wydaho Nordic Race Series Season Finale. Lots of skiers skied fast, but there was also a lot of fun going on like the younger skiers, or the two gals attempting to ski with their legs taped together. The weather was perfect, the company was fantastic, and it was a great gathering of Nordic friends!

Most likely some of those friends from yesterday will be out skiing today at Trail Creek. If they or you come out today, what you will discover is that pretty much every trail has been groomed in the past 24 hours, making for some nice skiing conditions. The recent Husky grooming was rather complex, with most of the recently abandoned trails being groomed last night and the fields and moose and elk track areas receiving additional grooming this morning. Existing classic tracks were nice and not touched when they didn’t need to be.  Wherever you go today, you’ll find some great skiing.

Groomer’s choice for today is to check out the recently brought back Faceplant.

Campground and yeti skate and classic track set in the evening 3/9. Turned out well and should firm up nicely. Enjoy some March skiing!

Singletrack: 3/9
Groomed the Powerline road, Grumpy’s, and the Hillbenders tonight. The Hillbenders had some pretty extensive post holing from a moose which we tried to shovel back in. The snow is still pretty soft and sugary. Hopefully it sets up with the cold temps out there but beware it may stay soft. If you are making ruts help us preserve the trail and air down or don’t ride. Thanks!

Please note the USFS dog closure policy Dec 1st – April 15th at this venue.

Made 4 passes in the skate lane with the ginzu to try to smooth out the drifts. Mostly successful but watch for some whoop-de–doos. Should set up nice and firm overnight. Enjoy!

Sherman Park

Grooming Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Last Updated: 3/8
Mostly good news in Sherman Park to report. And just a bit of the bad.

bad news: classic track not set. The track was quite firm and the track setter could not do its job well. Darn it. good news: the skate track is in pretty good condition! Using the ginzu I was able to get rid of most of the deep track marks and fix the uncambered sections. Still not perfect but in much better shape than the last few days!

Should be some good gliding for the weekend. Enjoy it and that vitamin D!
