Shout Out to Frida the Dog and Her Responsible People

Shout out to Frida and her people for exemplifying responsible winter trail use by having a great leash system (see the hot pink in the photo), and taking the time to read the signs about where to travel on the groomed track since this was their first opportunity to walk in Grand Teton National Park! What a day they got! Thanks also to the GTNP Foundation/the Bushong Property Service for grooming a wide enough track for walkers, dogs, side by side classic skiers and skaters.

Trip Reports:

“Snowshoed out at Shadow Mountain Thursday- somehow we got to make fresh tracks! Went out to Antelope Springs to get beautiful views of the Tetons. Much easier on the way back in.” – Dawn C.

St. John’s Wellness Day

New cross-country skiers forged on a bluebird morning after the big storm. Thanks to the St John’s Health Wellness team, Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis Club and JH Nordic Alliance volunteers for a team outing introducing a dozen St John’s staff to classic skiing. We definitely had fun, people laughed (no one cried) and everyone felt their skis glide. Dozens of questions about gear, technique and trails were asked and answered and staff from the hospital enjoyed connecting in a new way with this place in winter and with each other.

New on the Blog: Pro Tips to Keep Skiing, Keep Learning

Longer days and warmer temperatures, plus the fitness built up by this point in the season, makes March an excellent time to develop new skills and increase your endurance on skis. Better technique and endurance usually means more fun on longer adventures, and it is getting close to crust cruising season! Click the “read more” link for a few tips from two local experts, in their own words.

There are some incredible prizes up for grabs… Just added: tickets to soak in the hot springs at Astoria Park Conservancy. Get to entering, odds are good you’ll end up with something great.

We encourage winter trail users to support all of our grooming teams across Jackson Hole and Teton Valley. When possible please consider a donation to the trails you frequent. Please leave a comment such as “grooming” or “Nordic” in the designation or campaign section.

Lots to Talk About?
First off thanks to coaches Libby and Annabel for taking and submitting the great image above from yesterday’s Teewinot practice.  Looks like they were having a great adventure, enjoying a great day!

Looking to the East, a dozen JHSC racers and a few coaches are checking out the national championship race courses at   Mt. Van Hoevenberg near Lake Placid, NY.  The webcam shot looks like the course is well covered with snow, although the mountains look a bit bare.  The stadium webcam can be viewed here and all the racing information and results will be on the event website.  Racing begins on Monday.

And finally, we did some grooming today.  Today’s Husky grooming was pretty much the race course mentioned above.  The woods section received a single pass with classic tracks only being reset in the narrow sections as the existing ones were quite nice.  The fields received additional passes and even the Ginzu was called for a brief stint to groom through the gate by Mug’s Meadow as the Husky won’t fit.

All in all conditions are very nice, it’s painfully beautiful here today with perfect Nordic temps, calm winds and an intense blue sky; it’s simply a fantastic day to ski, and even a Friday, come check it out!

Groomer’s choice for today is to make sure you come out to the race tomorrow.

Southern Valley Nordic

Grooming Schedule: Tuesday, Friday, Sunday
Last Updated: 3/8
Skate and classic set on South valley Nordic trails. Still a lot of soft snow out there but it should ski great. Happy gliding everyone!

Singletrack: 3/9
Groomed the Powerline road, Grumpy’s, and the Hillbenders tonight. The Hillbenders had some pretty extensive post holing from a moose which we tried to shovel back in. The snow is still pretty soft and sugary. Hopefully it sets up with the cold temps out there but beware it may stay soft. If you are making ruts help us preserve the trail and air down or don’t ride. Thanks!

Please note the USFS dog closure policy Dec 1st – April 15th at this venue.

Teton Reserve Nordic

Made 4 passes in the skate lane with the ginzu to try to smooth out the drifts. Mostly successful but watch for some whoop-de–doos. Should set up nice and firm overnight. Enjoy!

Sherman Park

Grooming Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Last Updated: 3/8
Mostly good news in Sherman Park to report. And just a bit of the bad.

bad news: classic track not set. The track was quite firm and the track setter could not do its job well. Darn it. good news: the skate track is in pretty good condition! Using the ginzu I was able to get rid of most of the deep track marks and fix the uncambered sections. Still not perfect but in much better shape than the last few days!

Should be some good gliding for the weekend. Enjoy it and that vitamin D!

Driggs School Loops

Alta Nordic Track

Grooming Schedule: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday
Last Updated: 3/9
Just made two passes with the ginzu to smooth out the skate lane. Attempted to set a classic track on the practice loop but the results were a crumbly mess so I decided to leave David’s work from yesterday alone. The snow is hard enough that most of the classic track remains in decent shape.
