XC Ski Outing Hosted by Jackson Hole Land Trust, on Land Trust Conserved Land at Trail Creek

The Jackson Hole Land Trust welcomed a lively group of cross country skiers to explore and enjoy a classic ski at Trail Creek Nordic Trails, home of the Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club’s Nordic program, on a sunny Thursday morning. Set in part on the Trail Creek Ranch, which has 272 acres permanently protected under a conservation easement with the Jackson Hole Land Trust, we learned how 1/3 of Jackson Hole’s private land is now protected under conservation easements thanks to land owners partnership with the JH Land Trust.

Not only is Trail Creek Ranch land the home a wonderful Nordic program and trails, but it provides high-quality habitat for wildlife species including elk, mule deer, moose, bears, mountain lions, bald eagles, and several species of owls.

Lots to Talk About?
First off thanks to coaches Libby and Annabel for taking and submitting the great image above from yesterday’s Teewinot practice.  Looks like they were having a great adventure, enjoying a great day!

Looking ahead to tomorrow, the Skinny Skis Wydaho Nordic Race Series Season Finale which is scheduled for 10 AM looks to be a fantastic way to finish your Nordic racing season.  You can click here for a higher resolution map, but the forecast calls for another perfect blue bird day with a start time temperature of 27ºF.  Both skate and classic skiers are welcome, distances include ½, 2, 5, and 10 kilometers.  Come on out for a fun day of Nordic camaraderie!

Looking to the East, a dozen JHSC racers and a few coaches are checking out the national championship race courses at   Mt. Van Hoevenberg near Lake Placid, NY.  The webcam shot looks like the course is well covered with snow, although the mountains look a bit bare.  The stadium webcam can be viewed here and all the racing information and results will be on the event website.  Racing begins on Monday.

And finally, we did some grooming today.  Today’s Husky grooming was pretty much the race course mentioned above.  The woods section received a single pass with classic tracks only being reset in the narrow sections as the existing ones were quite nice.  The fields received additional passes and even the Ginzu was called for a brief stint to groom through the gate by Mug’s Meadow as the Husky won’t fit.

All in all conditions are very nice, it’s painfully beautiful here today with perfect Nordic temps, calm winds and an intense blue sky; it’s simply a fantastic day to ski, and even a Friday, come check it out!

Groomer’s choice for today is to make sure you come out to the race tomorrow.

Skate and classic set on South valley Nordic trails. Still a lot of soft snow out there but it should ski great. Happy gliding everyone!

Groomed most trails except Happy Hour which has a downed tree that needs to be cut out. We’ll get to that soon. Only sled packed Hillbenders for now. Big shout out to D “The king of fat” for getting it all going again. Expect soft conditions for awhile. Be sure to air down to around 3 psi to help keep the trail in good shape.

Mostly good news in Sherman Park to report. And just a bit of the bad.

bad news: classic track not set. The track was quite firm and the track setter could not do its job well. Darn it. good news: the skate track is in pretty good condition! Using the ginzu I was able to get rid of most of the deep track marks and fix the uncambered sections. Still not perfect but in much better shape than the last few days!

Should be some good gliding for the weekend. Enjoy it and that vitamin D!

The Drift Run, Fat Bike, or Ski

March 8-10, 2024
Pinedale, Wyoming

For the last 100 years Wyoming cowboys have “drifted” their cattle each fall out of the mountains where they go to to the desert for the winter. In this epic event racers experience Wyoming– under Wyoming’s terms–Wyoming style. Choose a discipline–Ski, Bike, Run– then set out to complete the course before mother nature finds a way to finish it for you. It is still very much winter up here in March. The temperatures can be sub zero, the wind can be relentless, and snowfall can be measured in feet.

Skinny Skis Season Finale

Trail Creek Ranch, Wilson

Courses from ½ k to 10 k means there’s something for everyone. Registration opens at 8am on race day. Suggested entry: $20. All proceeds go to Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club.
