New on the Blog: Top Dog-Friendly Winter Trails

It’s great being a dog in the Tetons where many dog-friendly winter trails are waiting to be sniffed. Though not every area is open to our four-legged friends, there are several spaces where well-behaved dogs and owners are welcome. Get to know which of these trails are right for you and your dog. Be sure to brush up on your Petiquette and you’ll be sure to get off on the right paw.

We’ve put together a list of the top dog trails in the Tetons, conveniently organized by their locations in Jackson, Wilson, and Teton Valley. Familiarize yourself with the trails that suit you and your dog best.

Good News on Grooming

More local winter trails are being groomed on a consistent basis! If you are ready to get on a groomed track check out Trail Creek and Teton Pines Nordic on the Jackson side. In Teton Valley Teton Canyon and Southern Valley Nordic have enough snow for consistent grooming. And Grand Targhee has posted that they groomed Hampster, Snowdrift, and Rick’s Basin Loops on Saturday.

And of course you can make your own skier tracked trails, check out our trails page for inspiration.

Trail Creek

Last Update: 12/9
Husky Time

A beautiful sight is a Prinoth Husky making its way around the trails at Trail Creek!  Today was the maiden journey; the Husky did carefully venture forth, making an exploratory lap around the close field with some quite nice results.  This lap did confirm however that conditions are still very thin and that the Husky will be bowing out to the Ginzu for the majority of the grooming until substantial additional snow falls.  Speaking of snow fall, about five inches is now being projected in the hourly forecast over the weekend.

Today’s grooming was much more than the Husky’s lap, the Ginzu covered all of the recently groomed trails today with multiple passes.  The major trail sections not being groomed yet are the East Fields and the National Forest trails right next to the Old Pass Road.  Every day and every bit of additional snow helps to move our current rustic conditions closer to Nordic pristine.  While definitely not yet ready for the Olympics, the most recent inch of snow and a couple of passes from the Ginzu bring most of the trails to the best conditions of the year yet.  Do be careful on several of the forest trails that still have prominent ruts from vehicle traffic and watch out for quite a bit of brush showing through as well.

Looking ahead to next week, the really good news is that West Yellowstone finally got enough snow to host the season’s IMD opener December 15th and 16th.  Full details are available at their website; a road trip to West Yellowstone is always fun, next weekend you could also watch some great Nordic racing!

Groomer’s choice for today is a few bluebird sunny laps on some tantalizingly beautiful Husky grooming.

Shooting Star

Last Update: 12/8
All trails remain closed due to lack of snow. Warm temperatures this past week significantly melted last weekend’s accumulations and our current system has only provided about 1” of snow so far. Outlook is calling for light snow through the weekend, though the forecasted amounts appear to be less than required for opening. We’ll continue to evaluate daily snow accumulations and decide if any trail preparations may begin. Fingers crossed for an unexpected heavy snow band this weekend!

Grand Targhee

This storm was bigger than expected…. And we couldn’t be happier about it.
