TVTAP Grooming FAQS

Questions and answers have been reprinted from the December 8 TVTAP Newsletter, some edits have been made for clarity and brevity.

When will you start grooming? We’ve started grooming!  The sunset photo was taken at Teton Canyon on Tuesday 12/5. Since then, we’ve had a bit of melt but then 4-7″ of new snow. We will start grooming at all six venues as soon as we are able to without causing damage to our equipment or the land beneath.  We rely on a large group of volunteers for much of our grooming, and we’ve got to train and schedule these awesome humans, too. So our schedule will be variable and conditions-dependent until we can put together the regular schedule. Hopefully it won’t be too long!

How can I find out when and where you’ve groomed? [Check jhnordic.com/grooming] We are using the real-time, map-based system called Nordic Pulse used around the Jackson area and at cross-country areas nationwide. Trails shown in GREEN will have been groomed that day. YELLOW trails last saw a groom 1-3 days prior. The color-coding offers a pretty cool, quick way to see what’s going on.

What causes the most damage to winter trails? Footprints – whether from wild animals, dog paws, snowshoes or boots.  Most of our trails are groomed for multi-use recreation and we want people to enjoy them, so we groom often to fix the damaged trails.

Do You Have More Questions?  Reach out to info@tvtap.org and we’ll get back to you. Or watch for our TVTAP tent, which will rotate around the winter trailheads all season. The tent will be hosted by different staff members and TVTAP Board members.  We will have info, trail stickers for purchase (Venmo, cash, or check), and chocolates!

Did You Have a Great Day on the Trails? Think of TVTAP and go online to buy an annual trail sticker ($75-$200) or give what you feel to support our donation-based trail system open to all.

Trail Creek

Last Update: 12/10
Gently Falling Snow

More of that fantastic white crystalized water has been falling from the sky all morning at Trail Creek, getting us that much closer to having full winter conditions here at Trail Creek.  While totals so far are between the one and two inch amount, it is supposed to continue throughout the night.

Today’s grooming was mostly a best line Ginzu pass of all the recently groomed trails.  Yesterday’s Husky grooming in the field was still in good condition and was not touched.  Of note today, Armin’s received special attention with triple passes.  The base in that part of our area is smooth enough that a “first of the season” classic track was dropped in over much of the section.  Do bear in mind that we are still experiencing early season conditions so anticipate brush and uneven trails in certain areas; keep on snowing!

Many of our local skiers were in Lander over the weekend, participating in a Wyoming High School race.  Coach George even took an ambitious group of Junior skiers over to do their best in the open division; thanks to Coach George for the image and way to go, all that participated.  The great results of some of our local skiers in Friday and Saturday’s races are posted on this Wyoprep page.

Groomer’s choice for today is Armin’s.

Cache Creek Singletrack

Groomed by Friends of Pathways
Grooming Schedule: As Needed

Last Update: 12/10
We groomed the Cache Creek road to Noker Mine and upper Hagen from bridge 5 to 2.  The lower trails are still a little thin on snow, especially under the trees, but are still compact enough to use for now.  We will keep snowshoeing around and packing things in until there is enough snow to take the roller through.

Teton Pines Nordic

Last Update: 12/9
Come ski! Track is firm and fast and the sun is out! Still a little thin on some areas but overall it’s great. No classic track set yet due to shallow depth.

Shooting Star

Not Grooming Yet
Last Update: 12/8
All trails remain closed due to lack of snow. Warm temperatures this past week significantly melted last weekend’s accumulations and our current system has only provided about 1” of snow so far. Outlook is calling for light snow through the weekend, though the forecasted amounts appear to be less than required for opening. We’ll continue to evaluate daily snow accumulations and decide if any trail preparations may begin. Fingers crossed for an unexpected heavy snow band this weekend!
