Slides and Mountain Lion Activity Up Game Creek

Earlier this week an ambassador reported a couple of snow slides about a mile up the Game Creek Trail, from last Friday. There has also been information of potential mountain lion activity in the same area. There have been reports of lion activity for the last couple of months in the Game Creek area. Skiers and those with dogs please be very aware of the surroundings while up on the Game Creek Trail!

First grizzly bear sighting of 2023 in the Jackson Hole area

This is a good reminder for Nordic skiers, fat bikers, snowshoers, and all winter trail users to be bear aware, carry bear spray, make noise, travel in a small group vs alone, and remain alert.

We need your continued help to avoid human-bear conflicts. Early in the evening on March 22, the first grizzly bear of 2023 was observed in Grand Teton National Park. As bears become active this spring, Bear Wise Jackson Hole reminds residents and visitors to secure attractants of any kind and be bear aware.

Adult male grizzly bears typically emerge from hibernation in March, while females with young typically appear between April and early May. The first grizzly bear sighting of 2022 in the Jackson Hole area occurred on March 13 in Grand Teton National Park. When bears emerge from their dens, they search for any available foods and often scavenge animals that died during the winter.

Trail Creek: Favorite Landmark Nearly Buried

It was like cross country skiing in December at Trail Creek today! Snow gently falling over groomed trails, snow covered conifers and aspens, perfect silence of snowy landscapes. One exception: our favorite landmark, Sam the Truck was almost submerged in snow! A rare but happy sighting!

One Week To Go!
Only one week left before Trail Creek closes for the season, but it sure doesn’t look like it outside. The snow is seemingly unending, and visibility was near-zero at the time of the grooming report. This will likely result in some fairly soft skiing today, but beneath that fluffy coating is a very excellent set of corduroy, since the snow was grooming very, very nicely today, hopefully making the trails quite pleasant to explore. Even the moose seem to be getting in on the action, with at least 5 and possibly up to 7 parading around and generally being grouchy in a very moose-like manner. Fortunately, they decided to move off onto the Ranch for now.

Today’s grooming was a fairly thorough pass across the system, with double passes on Moose Loop, Animal Farm, Old Pass Loop, Homesite, and Woolsey Woods, as well as the standard Fields trails. There isn’t much wind today, and drifting shouldn’t be an issue, so expect roughly equal skiing both in and out of the woods, but don’t forget the anti-seize.

Groomer’s choice is Old Pass Loop.

Cache creek and May park are groomed and in good shape. There will be snowmobile traffic up cache creek today through this weekend so don’t expect great skiing conditions. Game creek and south park pathway are groomed but will be a bit soft because of the new snow.

Shooting Star

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 3/20
The track groomed out very nice yesterday evening as warmer afternoon temperatures allowed our equipment to cut through the stubborn ice layer that formed from last week’s rain and subzero temperatures. For the remainder of the season, grooming will occur in either evenings or mornings depending on temperatures and storms. Anticipate grooming to occur in the morning time for most of this week, as the forecast is calling for daily snow and rain showers. Please note, in certain situations, such as a very wet rain/snow event, we may decide not to groom to preserve the integrity of trails as the snow base can become unstable causing severe ruts. Springtime brings constant evolving conditions throughout the whole day as massive temperatures swings promotes intense freeze/thaw cycles, creating icier morning skiing and softer, even slushy snow in the afternoon. The track this time of year can also settle out inconsistently while the snow melts during the day creating sunken spots, especially around catch/drainage basins. Skiers may also encounter icy and crumbly snow sections as the track is not as pliable once it makes the spring profile shift. We will continue to do our best working with the everchanging, sometimes extremely challenging spring conditions and update everyone over any noteworthy details as they arise. Enjoy the springtime skiing and soak up those sunny days whenever they pop up!

Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged. All you need to do is visit: GTNPF.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Nordic” in the designation section. There is the opportunity to leave a one time gift or reoccurring monthly donations in any amount.
