“The fire is winter’s fruit.” -Arabian Proverb
What a stormy week! Nice change after the recent cold, dry weather. We get most of our annual moisture during the winter months, so a deep snowpack helps moisten summer meadows and fill lakes and reservoirs. Each winter, the Tetons receive about 400 inches of snow at 9,000 feet and snowfall has now surpassed 400 inches in Rendezvous Bowl at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.
The earliest people in Jackson Hole came about 11,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age. They were nomadic tribes hunting animals and harvesting plants known as “hunter gatherers.” A timeline has been created using artifacts. They came during the summer months but most left in the late fall. We are in a small, isolated valley with deep snow. One local tribe, the Sheep Eaters, did remain in the valley and hunted the big horn sheep that winter on the rocky hills near town.
Winters can be tough, and our creature comforts make this fresh snow super fun. We get out to play in deep powder but nature quiets as animals conserve energy. When stormy, animals often “yard up” or hunker down in a protected spot. It takes so much effort to move they find a small area where needs are met. They wait for the snowpack to consolidate or settle.
My neighborhood squirrel stored extra cones last week. He found a spot under a snowbank, and I watched him run and gather. Squirrels remain active during the winter relying on stored food, fat reserves and a snug den. Wonder if he or she sensed this upcoming storm cycle?
It’s usually about three days after a storm that animals become quite active, and you find tracks everywhere. When the storm cycle ends, enjoy all the fresh tracks! Join us to learn about tracks, wildlife and what happens in nature after a storm. www.holehike.com 307.690.4453

Breezy But Beautiful
State Championships are coming up fast, and trails are rapidly being groomed to accommodate them. It’s quite windy out at Trail Creek today, with significant gusting and drifting, but even so, conditions have come together to be quite beautiful. Yesterday’s snow has combined with last night’s cold temperatures to be surprisingly cooperative, and many trails are in significantly better shape than they often are after a big wave of snow like this.
Today’s grooming was an offset pass of the skate course to clean up leftover heavy snow, and a double pass of pretty much everything else, as well as grooming on the Stadium, Lollipopper Land, and Skyview. Skyview was a bit rough and quite breezy, and so may need some fine tuning over the next few days, but at least it’s skiable now. Drifting was erasing many of the classic tracks fairly rapidly as well, but skate tracks seemed to be holding up. Current plans for grooming are an early grooming tomorrow morning before the race inspection, and then switching to evening grooming that night and the ensuing nights until Saturday, to make sure the race course is in as good of shape as possible.

Anticipate very windy, snowy, and drifty conditions today through Wednesday as this current severe winter storm passes through. Advice would be to avoid trail usage during whiteout conditions and if you decide to brave the elements use a touring/backcountry Nordic set-up. Grooming will continue to occur daily throughout this weather event but will likely be ongoing past 10am as these conditions make for a slow groom. Again, please avoid trail usage when whiteout conditions exist and use extreme caution if venturing out on the trails during severe winter weather. Conditions look to be more favorable for Nordic Skiing on Thursday. Thanks, and stay safe!
Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged. All you need to do is visit: GTNPF.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Nordic” in the designation section. There is the opportunity to leave a one time gift or reoccurring monthly donations in any amount.

Last Update: 2/20
It’s storm skiing today. The flats and the mule loop had multiple passes and classic track set in most places however the snow is filling in quickly. The lower pasture did not receive any attention today so it will be a great spot for your BCXC skis. Fat biking is not recommended today, the single track is open for snowshoeing but closed to bikes today.
Turpin Meadow Ranch is open to all for skiing, lodging, dining, Nordic lessons, and tours! Closing day (March 12, 2022) is not too far away so make your plans to come to Turpin soon! Call the office (307) 543-2000 or visit our website to book your adventure and/or meal!

A few inches have accumulated overnight during the tail end of a 3 day storm. Most of the 24 hour snow total fell yesterday between 6 am and 1pm. If you’re skiing today, anticipate light winds, cold temperatures and cloudy skies throughout the day.
Remember, singletracks will be closed when there is more than 3 inches of snow in a 24 hour period.

Wednesday: Plan to take the sled out and survey the track. Then will make a few passes with the roller. Probably will not set the classic. Will start at 12:30 and continue for most of the afternoon. Today’s goal is to pack the snow one more time so that a good groom can take place tomorrow. Let it keep snowing!

Skate: Set | Classic: Not Set
This morning I rolled out the new snow. Since the forecast is calling for more snow and wind, I didn’t set the classic track. The skate track is very soft. Don’t expect any quick laps today.😉 It looks like the weather will settle late Friday, so I plan on doing a more thorough groom then.

Adventurous out there today. I made a few passes with the roller just to reclaim the track. Skating should be ok but a bit soft. Walking track was reset. Watch out near the riding area. Groomer got stuck and the track got a bit chewed up.

Tuesday mid-day: I tried to get to the trailhead to groom but it’s a no go. The highway is not fully plowed and the plow attempting to clear the trailhead was stuck just past the bridge. Grooming will have to wait for the storm to pass. Sorry for the inconvenience!
