JHSC March Nordic Newsletter

Happenings of the JHSC Nordic Program, Trail Creek Nordic Center, and Local Nordic Community
It has been an amazing month in the Nordic skiing world!  JHSC skiers have done a fantastic job racing domestically and abroad, with many going to the upcoming national championships. Trail Creek Nordic Center has had a busy racing and practice schedule, and even the master skiers have had to be on their toes with lots of racing and training opportunities.  Read on to find out all the details in this month’s newsletter.

Trip Report: Trail Creek Nordic trails on a snowy day!

Trail Creek Nordic Trails was an optimal choice for classic and skate skiers in a snowy day. First tracks on corduroy, soft enough for good traction to climb Suicide Hill, crisp classic track set everywhere, only one set of elegant skate skiers passing our group. We followed moose tracks into Woolsey Woods, then spotted the female moose comfortably off the trail busy browsing on twigs. Thanks to groomer Steve for outstanding trail preparation. Sam the Truck is nearly buried in fresh snow, a winter wonderland in March!
Visit Trail Creek Nordic and support the JH Ski & Snowboard Club’s home trails, one of the most beautiful trail networks.

We encourage winter trail users to support all of our grooming teams across Jackson Hole and Teton Valley. When possible please consider a donation to the trails you frequent. Please leave a comment such as “grooming” or “Nordic” in the designation or campaign section.

Yeti Sighting!
Luckily the Teewinots seemed to survive and perhaps thrive after their encounter with a Yeti yesterday on the trails of Trail Creek!  You never know quite what you’ll find on your next Nordic outing, a moose, an elk, a fox, or a yeti; you can usually find at least a pretty good Nordic ski, thanks to Coach Libby for the images.

If you do make it out today to Trail Creek, you will find lots of snow with another winter storm warning in effect and also lots of fresh Husky grooming.  The current round of snow is forecast to dump between 11 and 20 inches between now and Wednesday evening.

Wydaho Race (800x553).jpg

Today’s grooming shifted gears and began focusing on the upcoming Skinny Skis Wydaho Nordic Race Series Season Finale which is scheduled for 10 AM Saturday.  You can click here for a higher resolution view.  While the Husky did make multiple passes in the close field and on the Nordic X course, the woods routing was mostly a single skate/classic pass of the course above.  We’ve received 3-4 inches since yesterday’s grooming which turned into some nice, if slightly soft corduroy and very skiable classic tracks.

Be sure to mark your calendars for the upcoming race, there will be distances for everyone, ranging from ½ to 10 K, a grand way to begin to wrap up a great season of racing.

Groomer’s choice for today is to look for the Yeti on you ski today.

Tuesday morning: I did a few laps with the roller to try to widen the trail. Nick and the Rabbit did an awesome job re-establishing the trail yesterday. Did one pass with the Ginzu to set the classic track on Campground and Yeti. The Yeti cutoff trail is not groomed due to a downed tree. Get out for some skiing before it gets buried again!

Singletrack: 3/4
Parking lot is plowed. However none of the trails are groomed. We’ve been having a hard time getting the trails groomed and only getting snowmobiles stuck. Snow shoes, fat tires and skis are encouraged to help us pack while we continue to make attempts. Standby for updates.

Please note the USFS dog closure policy Dec 1st – April 15th at this venue.

It is very soft in many places and the skis of the snow machine were leaving som deep ruts. Skiing is not so great right now but we will keep working on it. Thanks for your patience.

The Drift Run, Fat Bike, or Ski

March 8-10, 2024
Pinedale, Wyoming

For the last 100 years Wyoming cowboys have “drifted” their cattle each fall out of the mountains where they go to to the desert for the winter. In this epic event racers experience Wyoming– under Wyoming’s terms–Wyoming style. Choose a discipline–Ski, Bike, Run– then set out to complete the course before mother nature finds a way to finish it for you. It is still very much winter up here in March. The temperatures can be sub zero, the wind can be relentless, and snowfall can be measured in feet.

Skinny Skis Season Finale
