Trip Report: Trail Creek Nordic trails on a snowy day!

Trail Creek Nordic Trails was an optimal choice for classic and skate skiers in a snowy day. First tracks on corduroy, soft enough for good traction to climb Suicide Hill, crisp classic track set everywhere, only one set of elegant skate skiers passing our group. We followed moose tracks into Woolsey Woods, then spotted the female moose comfortably off the trail busy browsing on twigs. Thanks to groomer Steve for outstanding trail preparation. Sam the Truck is nearly buried in fresh snow, a winter wonderland in March!
Visit Trail Creek Nordic and support the JH Ski & Snowboard Club’s home trails, one of the most beautiful trail networks.

Trail Creek

Last Update: 3/4

Maximum Total Winter!
If you’ve ever wanted to find the ultimate winter conditions, it is pretty much here today at Trail Creek.  The snow has continued to fall with another 6 inches so far since yesterday’s grooming; fences, bushes, sage brush, etc., have all simply disappeared from sight as the snow has accumulated.  While the Phillips Bench Snotel is currently showing us at 97% of normal, the fact that we’ve rapidly climbed from a record low reading is making the snow we have seem like even more.

Pine Grosbeak.jpg

In spite of the fact that there is a seemingly endless amount of the glorious white stuff out there, if you have time for a Nordic ski today you will discover that where it counts, it has been tamed to form some pretty nice ski trails.  The Husky was hard at it today, covering not only the basic trail network, but also all the funky play areas in anticipation of a busy practice session later in the day.  Conditions are mostly quite nice although you will find some softer snow in places and few of the intersections have not totally cleaned up due to all the recent snow.

A special treat today was that a flock of pine grosbeaks were hanging around the cabin.  They are a gray bird, about twice the size of a chickadee with some having very rosy heads, pretty cool.  And finally, Wydaho Final is Saturday at Trail Creek (more tomorrow) and 11 of our JHSC Nordic athletes are off to the national championships in Lake Placid, NY later in the week, go racers!

Groomer’s choice for today is to take advantage of all that glorious winter and go on a long ski.

The Drift Run, Fat Bike, or Ski

March 8-10, 2024
Pinedale, Wyoming

For the last 100 years Wyoming cowboys have “drifted” their cattle each fall out of the mountains where they go to to the desert for the winter. In this epic event racers experience Wyoming– under Wyoming’s terms–Wyoming style. Choose a discipline–Ski, Bike, Run– then set out to complete the course before mother nature finds a way to finish it for you. It is still very much winter up here in March. The temperatures can be sub zero, the wind can be relentless, and snowfall can be measured in feet.

Skinny Skis Season Finale
