Trip Report: 5 XC ski outings in 3 days in Jackson Hole

Submitted by K.O.S

I did 5 XC ski outings in my 3-day trip, plus an afternoon alpine ski at JHMR.

Ski 1: Gray Meadow with a friend (small loop), bigger loop solo. “Free is a good price.”

Ski 2: Taggart Lake Trailhead north out and back, visit to Fabian cabins on return. Magical day of blue sky and clear views of Cathedral Peaks, with JH Ecotour Adventures. Our guide, Ryan, was excellent with multiple moose and local wildlife sightings. 10.0 rating.

Ski 3: Ladies skate ski at Teton Pines. Love the access from Teton Village via the START Bus, stop at Persephone West, then XC ski.

Ski 4: GTNP – Moose-Wilson road trail out and back from Granite Canyon trailhead. Crusty snow was dicey on skinny skis though easy access from Teton Village and peaceful setting. Creek crossings were beautiful.

Ski 5: Shooting Star Nordic Center. Excellent grooming and soft late afternoon conditions. Great views of the valley and back toward Jackson Hole Mountain. Beautiful houses in here too.

I really enjoyed exploring all the trails here. Would like to see more next time!

Classic Cross-Country Technique Practice at Trail Creek Nordic

JH Ski & Snowboard Club Nordic Masters practice their classic technique last week. While Trail Creek Nordic trails are known for its hills, alpine forest, and gently hilly meadows, it also has some excellent flat groomed terrain to practice on right at the start.

Boulder Mountain Tour

Local avid Nordic skiers Ponteir and Brett on the podium at this weekend’s Boulder Mountain Tour in Sun Valley. A favorite race for many Nordic skiers of all ages from Jackson! Well done by all!!

Making Memories in Planica

Lori I. wrote a wonderful blog post about Planica, Solvania. While it may seem like a far off place and topic, it is actually quite relevant as this coming week (Feb 5-11) JHSC athletes Lucas Wilmot and Elijah Weenig are competing at the 2024 Nordic Junior & U23 World Ski Championships in Planica, Slovenia. Not to mention, after reading this article you may be inspired to start planning a summer bike or winter ski trip there; it looks like an amazing Nordic tradition and culture!

Here are a few links if you are interested in learning more or watching some of the racing. We send our best wishes to Lucas and Elijah for this racing adventure: may they have safe travels, the best of luck, and the opportunity to make some remarkable memories of their own!

Hammered!

The biggest storm of the year, totals are currently into the “north of a foot” range and we are still experiencing heavy snowfall.  While we’re probably through the biggest part of the current go around, snow is forecast to continue through the week.

If your goal today was to get on your skate skis and set a personal record, it’s probably not going to happen.  If however, you would enjoy a great workout moving through some very snowy woods, that could certainly be on the docket.

Today’s extensive Husky grooming did cover everything with anticipation of a busy practice schedule this afternoon.  Most of the wood’s trails received a single skate classic pass except for Moose Loop which received two passes.  The fields all pretty much received multiple passes.  About 4-6 inches of snow has fallen since grooming began.

Weekly Schedule (800x244).jpg

Another quite busy week is happening at Trail Creek this week although many skiers will be gone later in the week for the third and final IMD Qualifier in McCall, Idaho.

Groomer’s choice for today is the very snowy Moose Loop.
