Making Memories in Planica

Lori I. wrote a wonderful blog post about Planica, Solvania. While it may seem like a far off place and topic, it is actually quite relevant as this coming week (Feb 5-11) JHSC athletes Lucas Wilmot and Elijah Weenig are competing at the 2024 Nordic Junior & U23 World Ski Championships in Planica, Slovenia. Not to mention, after reading this article you may be inspired to start planning a summer bike or winter ski trip there; it looks like an amazing Nordic tradition and culture!

Here are a few links if you are interested in learning more or watching some of the racing. We send our best wishes to Lucas and Elijah for this racing adventure: may they have safe travels, the best of luck, and the opportunity to make some remarkable memories of their own!

Trail Creek

Last Update: 2/4

Sweet Sunday!
An inch of fresh snow, 29º temps, a mix of sun with a few snowflakes, and kilometers and kilometers of fresh Husky grooming, how great is that; it is a sweet Sunday for a Nordic ski at Trail Creek.

This morning’s grooming began with a very early journey through the woods.  Most of this route was a single Husky skate/classic pass.  Since it was finished, a dusting of snow has fallen, but skiing should be lovely.  Pretty much every trail in the woods was groomed and Moose Loop received two passes.

The fields were extensively worked today with fresh skate lanes and double classic tracks.  No matter your technique or where you go, a great ski is very attainable today!

Many thanks to member Kim Springer for sending in the image above of Mariah Bredal, a skier with a lot of history in the valley who won the female Full Boulder at yesterday’s Boulder Mountain Tour, all the results are available here.

Groomer’s choice for today is the fields.

Shooting Star

Last Update: 2/2
Following the well above average temperatures this week, skiers may encounter some areas of settling and unevenness on the track. Fortunately, the forecast predicts some possible snow showers starting this evening and continuing through next Thursday. The trails remain in good shape despite the warm weather we have encountered this week and ski conditions should remain favorable following the predicted snow showers. Next update will be Monday 2/5.

  • Trail conditions are variable and thin areas persist.
  • Walking is not allowed.
  • Sled Hill is Open.
  • Classic Tracks are set where snow allows.

Turpin Meadow Ranch

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 2/4
A lot more snow fell overnight and early Sunday morning so the thin spots are filling in but overall trails are pretty soft. The sun is shining, classic tracks are set in the flats, the way back 40, and part of the lower pasture. I’d recommend gathering your friends, family, and/or dog and coming up for a classic ski tour to take in all the magical winter scenery Turpin has to offer.

TMR is open to the public daily for skiing, meals, Nordic lessons, and tours! Call the office (307) 543-2000 or visit our website to book your adventure! Check out our live webcam for current conditions.

Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged.
