Trip Report: Trail Creek Nordic
Setting off with a few friends at 10:30am today, besides our trusty Trail Creek Groomer, we had what felt like all of Trail Creek Nordic trails to ourselves. Fresh corduroy and classic set tracks in East Field, Woolsey Woods, Outward Bound, and all those middle area loops to reach Sam the Truck. We looked up our location on JHNordic.com/Trails/ then typed in Trail Creek to see the blue dot of our exact trail location, very handy in the wooded loops. Eventually, we saw a few friends also out, some training for the Boulder Mountain Tour next weekend.
Snow and grooming was perfection. Highly recommended. Remember to drop $20 in the Trail Fee box at the Ski Club Nordic cabin to support the JH Ski & Snowboard Club Nordic daily grooming!

Trail of the Month: 3 Loops for a Quick Nordic Ski
In the winter months, there is usually ample snow for skiing, but the limited daylight can make it more difficult to spend time outdoors. While skiing in places like GTNP, Teton Pass, or Turpin Meadow Ranch offers a breathtaking experience in a tranquil setting, it’s not always feasible to take the time to drive to the trailhead and still get in your ski. That’s why it’s a good idea to identify nearby loops so you can get out for a quick lunchtime Nordic ski. For our January trail of the month, here are three quick and accessible trails for a convenient lunchtime or post-work ski; May Park, Stilson Loop Trail, and Driggs Winter Trails.

First Place Finishes!
IMD racing continues today in Utah at the Soldier Hollow Nordic Center, but so far yesterday Nate Streubel and Aurora Stiles won their respective U20 & U18 male and female categories, way to go! All the results are available at Zone 4 Timing (download the csv for an easier to view format) and you can still watch the racing live with the Soldier Hollow web cam.
Talking about the upcoming weather, the current forecast indicates we have a few very warm and sunny days coming our way with grooming possibly altering subtly to accommodate this short term way above normal condition. Looking at our snowpack from the Phillips Bench Snotel reporting station, while we have moved out of the recent record low conditions, we still are pretty much on the short side.
Good news is on the horizon however, the 6-10 day forecast while remaining warm is forecasting substantial precipitation and the 8-14 day is looking to be every Nordic skier’s dream, cold and snowy! We should be able to ski fine through the mini warm up and hopefully bases will build ensuring a long and wonderful cross country ski season soon.
Today’s grooming at Trail Creek was Husky driven and covered pretty much every trail. The formula for the day was to raise or lower the classic track setter depending on which technique would serve the greater good. Multiple passes were made through the Close Field. All in all, no matter your technique or where you want to go, you should find some pretty nice skiing today.
Groomer’s choice for today is for the JHSC skiers to go fast at Soldier Hollow.

Warmer temperatures will continue through this weekend into next week. Skiers may encounter settling and choppy sections on the track. The sledding hill will continue to be groomed only as needed due to the thin snow profile. We will continue to do our best grooming with the conditions that are thrown at us. With the continuing high temps, anticipate grass and brushy areas to possibly re-emerge. Our grooming schedule and methods may shift in the upcoming week to preserve the track’s lifespan. Next update will be Monday 1/29.
- Trail conditions are variable and thin areas persist.
- Walking is not allowed.
- Sled Hill is Open. Grooming will be as needed.
- Classic Tracks are set where snow allows.

Sunday’s groom was done Saturday evening with the ginzu. I reset the classic track where I thought I could improve it in the hills and tried to fix up where the moose stomped around on the Willow loop. The skiing has been fast and fun no matter which style you choose. The single track trails are in great shape too. There have been lots of animal sign all over, what a wild place we live!
TMR is open to the public daily for skiing, meals, Nordic lessons, and tours! Call the office (307) 543-2000 or visit our website to book your adventure! Check out our live webcam for current conditions.
