Today is a Great Day to Get Outside and Enjoy Winter!

There are a lot of fabulous human powered activities happening today in Jackson. Moose Day is going on at Cache Creek from 8 am-11am. Today is also Winter Trails Day featuring fat bike and ski demos around Jackson Hole – JH Nordic Alliance will have partners in all 3 locations!

High school Nordic state championships are happening today at Trail Creek. If you want to support the local team, the race starts at 10:00AM. Head to Stilson and catch the shuttle to give them a cheer, ring a cowbell, and encourage them towards their best possible time. After the race is over, results will be posted here.

If you are wanting to race today head over to Alta track in Teton Valley for the Alta Vista Skiathlon. The race starts at 10AM, day of race registration will be available between 8:30 am – 9:30 am.

Unfortunately the Women in the Tetons cross country ski event that was planned for today had to be cancelled. From the Women of the Tetons: “We are sorry to announce that we have to cancel our Cache Creek Nordic Ski Meet up that was planned for Saturday, February 25.  With a few board members on crutches, one with sickness in the house, and another on baby watch, we sadly will need to postpone the event. Stay tuned for more details.”

New on the Blog: The Four Seasons of Winter

It is hard for people who don’t live here to understand winters out west. Gregory Zeigler’s latest post explains the truth about a Teton winter: there are really four seasons, each lasting approximately six weeks. Read the post to find out which season of winter we are currently in and what to expect weather wise in the coming weeks.

Avalanche Awareness, Always, Even on Valley Trails

With over 3 feet of new snow in the past week, nordic and winter trail users need to use caution when recreating on trails and terrain below steep slopes. See todays BT Avalanche Center Report for the Tetons below.

Where to go nordic ski, fat bike ride, snowshoe with all this snow?
-Groomed trails offer soft packed surfaces, ideal for nordic classic skiing.
Consider using your wider classic skis to stay on the surface, even on groomed trails.

– Fat bikes will do best on firmer trails and pathways and should avoid soft trails to prevent leaving tire ruts.

– Snowshoes are excellent for venturing into untracked snow, but it’s deep out there! You may travel a shorter distance and exert more energy. Same goes for for BC Nordic skiing on untracked snow and trails.

Be sure to dress warmly in layers. Temps are cold, but you’ll warm up quickly!

High School State Championships (Part 1)
The stadium has been erected, the podium is ready, and the racers are only waiting for the race to begin! If you want to support our local team, the race starts at 10:00, so head to Stilson and catch the shuttle up to give them a cheer, ring a cowbell, and encourage them towards their best possible time. After the race is over, results will be posted here.

Grooming took place yesterday evening, and only about half an inch of snow fell overnight, so conditions at Trail Creek are very good right now. Recreational skiers are free to use the East Fields and upper close fields warm-up loop; just be sure not to cross the pin flags, and you’ll be fine! Be sure to check out the special viewing area along the south fenceline, here exclusively for races.

Groomer’s Choice is to cheer on your local team!

While many of us dream of clipping into our skis for early-season skiing in Jackson Hole, this November, you can still see the roots and rocks beneath your feet. A forecast predicts another 3 inches of snow this weekend in Jackson, with a few more inches expected into Thanksgiving week, and we’re all ready for it.
