Trip Report: White Grass Ranch Nordic

White Grass Ranch makes for a beautiful ski for all ages and abilities.  The Ranch is the third-oldest in the valley and the buildings have been painstakingly restored to be used by the National Park for summer staff housing. The porch of Cabin 1160A makes for a lovely lunch spot!  Although the parking area was full, we saw only three other parties on a Sunday afternoon.  – From K & J

A Freshly Groomed Trail?!
You might never guess, but minutes before this picture was taken, a grooming pass was made through the East Field trail pictured above.  Blizzard is perhaps a word that would describe what is happening today at Trail Creek.  The most interesting phenomenon of our most recent weather is that some very large drifts (3 feet +) have formed in a few places around the fields.

Never to fear, skiing is still an option today.  As grooming was wrapping up the sun was putting in more of an appearance and even though swirling snow gusts as pictured below were still storming across the landscape, it did feel like things were calming a bit.

Most of today’ grooming was rolling in the fields to allow our nearly 200 student athletes the ability to disperse throughout the trail network.  All woods trails are actually in pretty good shape with no fresh tree falls reported.  As of 11 AM it was also relatively easy to make it from the cabin to the woods.

Yes, the weather has been a bit wild today, but you can still find places to ski.

If all goes according to plan, the Pisten Bully will be returning to Trail Creek around 11:30 tomorrow.  This will most likely lead to no grooming happening until that time, but extensive grooming mid-day.

Groomer’s choice for today is to head to the woods.

Shooting Star

A winter weather & wind advisory is currently in effect, bringing potential gusts up to 50 mph and more snow through Tuesday. Be sure to channel your inner Viking if you dare to brave these robust conditions. Calmer and more enjoyable conditions appear to return on Wednesday. Friendly reminder for all Nordic participants to use extreme caution and common sense when skiing or deciding to ski during weather events. High winds, drifting, and new snow accumulations throughout the day are to be expected during storms once the morning grooming is finished. Our groomers have been doing an amazing  job in smoothing out routine overnight drifts that average 5-10 FT high during white out conditions & very poor visibility.  We’ll continue to try our best for creating enjoyable skiing, but please respect what mother nature is doing and plan ahead for inclement events. Enjoy and Stay Safe!  Next update will be Thursday 2/25.

We are in a storm cycle and trails are very soft due to all the new snow. It needs to stop snowing for a couple days and the temperature needs to drop for the trails to firm up. Till then, consider alternative places to ride, like plowed roads, or machine groomed snowmobile trails. Or, go ski powder!

No dogs December 1 – April 15.
