Responsible Winter Trail Use

Recreating responsibly is one of the best ways we can preserve the qualities that draw us to live and recreate in this magnificent place. There are good habits we can practice every time we go out that help protect our watershed once the snow melts, reduce the stress that wildlife may experience during a season when they are vulnerable, preserve the quality of a groomed track, and promote community between users enjoying different types of recreation. Here are some friendly reminders for the next time you hit our winter trails.

Plan Ahead and Prepare
Find out which trails are open to and good for your choice of travel (eg is it singletrack for fat biking? Are there classic tracks?). Know which trails have wildlife closure areas and which welcome dogs. Plan and pack layers that will keep you comfortable. On JHNordic and other local sites you can also

Triple Teewinots!
The Teewinots were at it once again yesterday; Coach Libby reported, “Teewinots had a blast on the tandem skis today! The curvy tracks in the stadium were perfect for this team building activity. When the snow picked up this afternoon, we played in the powder – a silly snowy day!”  Thanks Coach Libby and crew for leading the Teewinots and thanks for the great images!

You too can follow the freshly groomed curvy tracks through the stadium today, or if you’d rather some of the other 16 kilometers of slightly straighter tracks around the rest of the trails of Trail Creek.  The Husky was on duty today, buffing out the fresh two to three inches of snow on all of those paths.  Pretty much every trail received at least a single skate/classic pass today with the fields and Moose Loop receiving multiple passes.  As of report time the temperature is a nearly tropical 37ºF at the cabin which has resulted in some pretty firm conditions from today’s grooming.

The forecast calls for light snow showers this afternoon with relatively balmy, if slightly unsettled conditions for the rest of the week.  Wednesday will be another busy practice day but then numbers will drop with races in Bozeman and Casper this weekend.

Groomer’s choice for today is to do something silly and ski the curvy tracks.
